From Dr Doug: ' There is a need for government support for scientific research even if the need isn't immediately apparent. The reason we have the knowledge and the ability to produce vaccine and anti-virals so rapidly is because of people like these at Vanderbilt.
While the vaccine creation and production has been amazingly rapid, the actual methodology and knowledge base is years (decades) in development."
Aren't there already vaccines available for various coronavirus diseases in animals? I'm not implying they would work against Covid, but that our researchers certainly "recognized the enemy" and there was already groundwork for how to build a vaccine? (Maybe that was mentioned in the video that I will watch later)

Yes, it is referred to in the video. The Q/A at the end of the video are also very helpful in understanding.

There are two coronavirus vaccines used in small animals, one in dogs and one in cats and also large animal bovine (I think) coronavirus vaccine that I'm not familiar with.
There is no cross protection and entirely different methodology in creating the vaccine, these vaccines have been around for years and address creating immunity in a different (more conventional) way.

In my humble opinion very minor chance of significant side effects. I have medical approval for my use of both Ibuprofen and Tylenol for antipyretics and together they are potent. Also for muscle pain.
I also advise checking with your health care provider now as to the format they are going to use to notify you of date time and place of inoculation. Being wheelchair bound I am especially curious how this is going to work in the San Diego area.

Just a quick note RE: vaccination reactions.
There was a report of an acute anaphylactic reaction to the Pfizer vaccination in an individual in Alaska. THIS IS NOT AN UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE when considering the numbers of vaccinations administered.
During 43 years of practice and administering 10s of thousands of vaccines we invariably encountered allergic reactions. Probably in the dozens during the length of my career. All were pretty easily treated with appropriate medications with no long term complications.
I will admit that the acute anaphylactic reactions in dogs and cats involved the skin (hives, itching and facial swelling) and seldom the respiratory system that is seen more frequently in people and the breathing issues tend to be more problematic.
My advice would be to not let the fact that an allergic reaction occurred be a deterrent to getting a vaccination. If you have had previous allergic reactions to vaccinations (not just "normal" pain and discomfort) discuss this with your health care provider.
To everyone, make sure you take the 15 minutes or so after the vaccination to allow the people administering the vaccine to observe for any possible reactions.

Anaphalactic shock for me consisted of feeling weak or ill, overall skin turned beet red, wheezing breathing and I could not at the time walk. The reaction was due to NSAIDS. An IV and ephedrine had me feeling 90% OK within 10 minutes. With these reports I am going to say I am reasonably confident that immunization sites will have at least ephedrine handy.
And NO I am not going to let this affect my decision. Not with the effect of not getting immunized. Suck it up and Go For It. It's an individual decision.

In the U.S. and Canada, vaccine recipients are supposed to hang around after the injection in case signs of an allergy appear and they need immediate treatment. That is exactly what happened when the health worker in Juneau became flushed and short of breath 10 minutes after the shot.
