When was the last VOC Variant of Concern discovered and it's origin?

Thanks in advance!

All of the sub lineages (Example BA.1 through BA.5) are included in the Omicron VOC

On November 24, 2021, South Africa reported the identification of a new COVID-19 variant, B.1.1.529, to the World Health Organization (WHO). B.1.1.529 was first detected in specimens collected on November 11, 2021 in Botswana and on November 14, 2021 in South Africa.

Globally, has the Delta variant faded entirely?

Is the latest wave of Ómicron overwhelmingly confined to the totally unvaccinated? I'm wondering why the CDC does not use the term "Undervaccinated" rather than "unvaccinated" to better describe outcomes?

As always I really appreciate professional expertise.

I'll let the experts opine but all the reports I have been reading include cases of fully vaccinated as well as unvaccinated. So no, it's not confined to the unvaccinated. I think "undervaccinated" refers to vaccinations with no or limited boosters.

The variant proportions by country overtime can be found here: Our World Data A quick survey suggests delta is a very small proportion of the sequenced samples. Omicron appears to be dominate worldwide; however, "Omicron" includes all of its sub-lineages. Unlike previous variants, the Omicron sub-lineages are dissimilar enough genetically that I feel some of them should be given different VOC names.

Omicron is infecting (i.e. "cases") unvaccinated, undervaccinated (not boosted), boosted, previously infected, and vaccinated + previously infected. The severity of the infections appear to be correlated to antibody levels that were induced by vaccination and/or previous infection and the time since the previous exposure to the antigen (from vaccination or infection).

Hospitalizations and deaths are overwhelmingly among the unvaccinated except where numbers are declining; as numbers decline hospitalizations and deaths by vaccination status (unvaccinated vs fully vaccinated) decline towards the same value (0) becoming more similar.

Previous exposure to the antigen is less effective against Omicron because of the genetic difference between Omicron and all previous variants. Previous infection by Omicron BA.1 does not prevent infection by BA.2, BA.3, BA.4 or BA.5 because of the genetic differences between these sub-lineages.

I can find links to the above information if there is interest.

With symptoms out of the Ómicron textbook, but without a test corroboration, I am left in the dark about multiple Ómicron events. Keeping abreast of all possible permutations is a challenge but for me it is a three hundred me round trip. Better safe than sorry will cost me hundreds of dollars. The alternative would be to get a B and T analysis for total count but the lost 15 hours and money will be the same amount. I have a few weeks to work it out. Your answer has great weight in this. Thank you.

Trained scent detection dogs were found to be more reliable than the PCR test at identifying asymptotic and symptomatic sars-cov-2 infected people.

Quote:

The canine olfactory test therefore appears to be more accurate than RT-PCR tests, for which the false negative rate can range from 2% to 30%

Moderna in the news

Omicron vaccine

Waiting on preprint of study

The Moderna Press Release does have some data.

I will get this one as my 4th shot if it is available before cases go higher in our region.

If it seems to be effective for BA4 and BA5 I'll read the study.

The media is now propagating an idea that the 1st standad mRNA booster leads to a higher incidence of Ómicron infection than it would be had immunization stopped at number2.

I think the first issue should be the unvaccinated. California's claim that it is a leader in vaccination percentages must be tempered with the fact that ten million residents have had no vaccination at all.
