Quote: U.S. health officials consider face masks for Americans to slow coronavirus, but 'not there yet'
As of an hour ago....
Should we all be wearing masks? That simple question is under review by officials in the U.S. government and has sparked a grass-roots pro-mask movement. But there’s still no consensus on whether widespread use of facial coverings would make a significant difference, and some infectious disease experts worry that masks could lull people into a false sense of security and make them less disciplined about social distancing.

Face masks... It made total sense when I watched that video of the South Korean doctor talking about Coronavirus.
Why do doctors where face masks? Yes we all should.
I found a bunch of sites telling how to make them at home. Not necessarily N95, but better than nothing.

Regular face masks are worn to protect the patient from infection by the healthcare workers, not to protect the healthcare workers.
N95 masks, which are rather uncomfortable, are worn by healthcare workers to protect themselves from infection.

"Should I wear a mask to protect myself?
Only wear a mask if you are ill with COVID-19 symptoms (especially coughing) or looking after someone who may have COVID-19. Disposable face mask can only be used once. If you are not ill or looking after someone who is ill then you are wasting a mask. There is a world-wide shortage of masks, so WHO urges people to use masks wisely.
WHO advises rational use of medical masks to avoid unnecessary wastage of precious resources and mis-use of masks (see Advice on the use of masks).
The most effective ways to protect yourself and others against COVID-19 are to frequently clean your hands, cover your cough with the bend of elbow or tissue and maintain a distance of at least 1 meter (3 feet) from people who are coughing or sneezing. See basic protective measures against the new coronavirus for more information."

My understanding is the CDC is "considering" changing their recomendation for healthy folks to start wearing masks when outside their home.
Me thinks that has always been a good idea, but the Gov't did not want to recomend it earlier due to the mask shortage. If 330 million people went out and tried to buy masks a month ago, there would have been none left for health workers.
I believe masks give some limited protection for healthy people. A lot of Japanese were wearing masks in crowds long before the virus.

The mask issue would not copy.
This MIT info released TODAY agrees with my opinion made awhile back.
The mask issue is primarily a no touch nose or mouth issue. Same as goggles.
I did not sit in the lecture hall and play tiddlywinks. We had a litany of pandemic specialists lecturing. They specically ridiculed the then prevailing one meter recommended aerosol protection zone. Fifty years have passed and still it's the same old rote.
How glad I am to have taken those courses. I did not study other than electromagnetics there. But two universities saying the same thing 50 years ago should never have been ignored.
Keep your distance and please keep looking for information about the masks. The importance was and is isolation from touching and contaminating. Or why else wash hands many times a day? This is simple logic. Every single item on a shelf in a store is a possible contaminator. How long does regular bar soap or alcohol gel maintain skin sterility? These are the questions you should be asking.
My attempts here are to try and keep people safe. If you prefer Darwin odds that's a personal choice.
