My short bed extended cab diesel was 7250 lbs with 2750 lbs on the rear axle. With the Arctic Fox 811, I had 7000 lbs on the rear axle.

I could have stayed with my 275/70R18 3650 lb rated tires, but I also tow a tongue heavy trailer behind the camper. I went to 19.5" wheels with 4500 lb rated rims and 4850 lb rated tires, so I had enough margin even when my rear axle was loaded up to 8000 lbs.

You may find that using upper and lower StableLoads will be better than air bags for handling. If you do not have the camper package with rear OEM stabilizer bar, plan on installing a Hellwig BigWig bar to reduce roll.

I did not use studded tires, but my tires did have an open shoulder traction tread and I carried chains just in case (have not had to use them). I travel mostly on the western side of the Cascades in the winter where it is closer to freezing and more slick than climbing up on the eastern side. You will find carrying 4000-5000 lbs in the back your truck does help with traction - I rarely had to use 4wd with the camper on the rear until I arrived at an unplowed parking lot.

Bedlam, that's incredibly helpful on all fronts, thank you! Lots of food for thought. Can you comment on what your total GVWR was with the 811?
I have no doubt that I COULD do the 990, safely. My ONLY concern is liability in the event of an accident.

Besides 19.5s, you could consider going to 18s with more load capacity. They go up to 4080 in Toyo brand.

After meditating on this for lo these many minutes, and after thinking back to what I wished I could haul with my old Tundra Crewmax, I believe I've decided to be happy or even thrilled with the prospect of easily carrying a Northern Light Sportsman (or whatever they have that will hold a generator) and not having to think twice about capacity. If, after one year of trying it out it proves to be too much of a hassle, we can upgrade to a dually and bigger camper.

My GVW was about 11,500 lbs with two occupants and the camper loaded and filled. Once hitched up, GVW was 12,500 lbs and GCW was 19,500 lbs.
I avoided snow when towing mostly because I did not want to have to chain up my truck and trailer but I did take the full combination across the Syskous, Cascades and Blue Mountains on a few Novembers with snow sticking.

That's very interesting, and it sort of confirms that 11,500 is possible, theoretically. Guessing my 2017 crew cab has a few lbs on your set-up though. Then add a couple hundred lbs in delta between the 811 and 990, and it might not be as close as I think.
Thanks for the info!

My guess is the Arctic Fox 990 will weigh about 250-500 lbs more than my 811, the crew cab long bed will add 250-500 lbs to the truck and an additional person in the truck will add even more.
You need to start by getting actual weights of your rear axle with just your occupants. This will tell you how much weight you can add before having to upgrade rims and tires. The rear axle has a 9750 lb OEM rating, so your concern will be wheels and suspension if you want something heavier. The front axle will not change enough that you need to worry about the 7250 lb Dana 60 capacity or current wheels.

People mention this all the time, but I have NEVER heard of it actually being an issue.
Heck, I'm overweight with the 811 on my dually.

Sliding-into-home wrote: I was shocked that the dealer said the quality is nowhere near AF. Are they not made in the same factory by the same people?! I don't really care if it's not as well insulated or doesn't have as many bells/whistles, so I'm hoping that was the only reason he said such a thing.
Dealers say the strangest things at times.
He was probably referring to "features and creature comforts" instead of actual build quality.
WC and AF are built by the same crew, on the same assembly line.
There's a really good Facebook Group for AF/EC campers if you are in to Facebook.

I was waiting... someone was bound to find a nice way to say it. Thank you.
