Magnusfide, actually the 13 year old went deer hunting with another one of our family. She was so proud of herself too. She actually made arrangements to go back there in the summer to help out with my daughters business. She will make a bit of money and will be able to have a savings account. It will be good for her. She lives with her mother who works the midnight shift and Abigail sits around in front of the tv much too much. Her most activity is when we take her camping.

Thinking of you wanderlost. Hope things are going well. Take care and God Bless.

Sounds like a win![emoticon]

I got to come home for a few days - more doctor visits. All went well, and I head back up tomorrow. Short and Tall Friend are back in their FW, so before I got here, Short Friend had cleaned my house! That was sooo sweet. Just need to steam mop the floor before I head back.

SF also went shopping in our pantry, and pulled out everything that's on the verge of being past the "best by" dates. What they didn't want, I'm hauling to Mom's for us to eat up and save on food shopping there. In a few minutes, I'll start loading the F-350 with a snootful of groceries, Christmas presents, medications, and a few more winter clothes, since it's gonna be in the single digits up there at night. WLToo and I have thinner blood after living here so long, so we'll get some wear out of the heavier clothes.

Both cats are due for various shots, so we'll have the vet clinic here coordinate with the one there and get it all done on schedule. They've really gone all out to keep each other fully informed of Alex' and Spotacus' status.

A herd of five deer wander past the house at least twice a day (when the feeder starts tossing out the goodies). Three of them are this year's fawns, already showing their antler buttons. Leoghaire and Gimpy's Fawn are the two does. I think Gimpy's Fawn should just be named Gif - it's easy to remember. I do miss interacting with them. Mom doesn't have deer around her place, just cattle across the back fence, and they're not as interesting to watch.

Time to get packing. Later, y'all.

It was right lively here for Christmas. Our friends kept Mom entertained; we cooked all kinds of yummy foods, and our friends got a personal tour of Palo Duro Canyon, the second largest canyon in the US.

Spotacus had a fight with a big gray cat. Neither got injured, and now Spotacus is making daily patrols around Mom's place. Alex strolls outside for about five minutes or less, then comes back inside and finds the nearest human to occupy.

Now our friends have all gone home, and it's just us and Mom. New Year's Eve should be interesting -- I know I'll make it to midnight, but I doubt WLToo or Mom will, so the bubbly will have to wait until New Year's Day.

I miss Leoghaire and her herd. Nothing close like that here. Sigh.

In case we don't have internet access, Happy New Year's to you all.

Later, y'all.

Sounds like a good Christmas celebration. Spotacus on guard duty - appropriate!

We're looking forward to the Hogmanay festivities at our friends' on New Year's Eve. The 5 lb haggis arrived this morning just as the company promised.

How was the haggis and whisky, magnunfide?

Our New Year's Day big meal was fairly simple: black-eyed peas cooked with bite-size pieces of leftover steak, salad, and roasted potatoes. It was just the three of us, so we didn't feel the need for anything fancy.

Then I came home for medical appointments and various chores. Tall and Short Friends are holding down the fort. SF is having fun with the Roomba. When we're not home, she comes over and runs it. She's convinced she can get all the cat hair out of the area rug if she runs it every day. Well, that will never happen, but if she likes to play with the Roomba, fine. She's also fascinated with the pool vacuum, also an iRobot product, so we have probably the cleanest pool in the area. So far, she hasn't developed a fascination for the bread maker -- that could be dangerous to our weights...

No sign of Leoghaire and the others. I think they are disgusted with us not being here to properly tend them. Well, when I get back to Mom's, I'm sending WLToo and the cats back home. Then he can start his winter revamp of the garden, which should get their attention and bring them back into the meadow.

With Mom's upcoming cataract surgery still in the "to be determined" stage, SF and I discussed the very real possibility that we can't make the Alaska trip again this year. If not, they'll go without us -- Tall Friend's health scare last year convinced them to not wait any longer to knock Alaska off the bucket list. Then, if we can go next year, they'll come along and show us the good stuff they found.

Happy New Year to all.

Later, y'all.

Hoping Leoghaire shows. I daresay the cat meisters will enjoy being home in their own territory. Hoping you can do Alaska too. Prayers for your mom.

The Hogmanay was fun and the Haggis was good: American haggis is more palatable to American tastes.

In late October 1996, a friend and former co-worker called me at work. One of her co-workers had found a young kitten hiding under a bush, yowling loudly. As a dog family, they had no idea how to handle a boisterous ball of energy that climbed draperies, thought their dachshund was a pony to be ridden, and insisted on copious amounts of affection and head bumps.

Rather than just dump him by the side of the road, as the father was planning, my friend said she knew of a safe place for the little guy. She called me and asked if we could take a third cat. I discussed it with myself for about five seconds, then talked with Rodney for a touch longer, and told my friend we’d take him.

Her co-worker’s entire family brought this tiny tuxedo cat to his new home. As they opened the carrier, I asked their young son what the kitten’s name was. “Gidget,” he replied. Oookay, that’s probably not what the cat thinks his name is.

The little guy strolled right up to our oldest cat, Klaus mit der Krallen, who hissed without any real venom, then sat down and watched Tuxedo Kitten explore the den. Heidi, our long-haired tabby, decided on the spot that Tuxedo Kitten presented a threat to her relationship with Klaus, whom she loved dearly. Klaus was oblivious to her affection, but Heidi maintained a frostly relationship with Tuxedo Kitten the rest of her life.

About ten minutes after he arrived, it was apparent that Tuxedo Kitten’s name was Alexander the Grrreat, for he conquered house, cats, and humans with dispatch and affection.

In the short time he was with his mother, Alex learned how to hunt ad how to manage humans. He was the most efficient killing machine we ever knew. He never met a human he did not love. When I was sick or down, he stayed by my side.

We almost lost him several times, but veterinarians’ determination and Alex’ own fierce survival skills brought him through each time. Finally, at the human equivalent age of 98, DOTL Specialist Alexander the Grrreat was called to the Rainbow Division, where, today, he reported for duty to General Missy.

My heart kitty is at the Rainbow Bridge with his best friend, Klaus, and all the lovely lady kitties who shared his home over his life.

I am over 500 miles away, broken hearted that I could not say goodbye. But WLToo held him as he reported to his new duty station, and will bury him in the meadow.

RIP, Alexander the Grrreat. I love you.
