Quick note, since we have to hit the hay early. WLToo has to have a hernia fixed in the morning, then he'll be on limited duty for a few weeks - no lifting anything heavier than Alex (certainly not Spotacus). Means if it's heavy, I'll handle it, except I am not about to climb up on the shed roof and finish shingling it. It will just have to wait.
Old Army buddy (OAB) is flying in on Tuesday, and then we'll frantically finish up the Thanksgiving pre-cooking. Sister and ex-BIL are doing the vegetables, salad and pumpkin pie. OAB and WLToo will cook the pork and pepper crusted turkey. I'll make the pecan pie cake (three layer), garlic mashed potatotes and roasted sweet potatoes.
Getting out the bone china, since we haven't used it in a few years. No point in having something we don't use...
Leoghaire got her corn and left a bit today, which two other does came up and ate. She really is a beautiful doe, like her mama was.
We had a cold snap last night, forcing me to turn on the heater this morning for a while. Off until about 1800, then had to turn it on again because tonight will be even colder, in the upper 30s. Then it warms back up to 70s/60s on Tuesday for the rest of the week. WLToo went out and turned on the heater in L'Andante, since we've not yet blown out the tanks, but it's not going to be all that cold here versus further back into the Hill Country.
Heard from Tall and Short Friends. They're enjoying the cold weather in Maine, but looking forward to coming home in late December. Us, too. We miss 'em.
OAB is retiring 31 Dec, but won't be moving down here for a while. Has to fix up Virginia house before putting it on the market. Hope he's down here sometime next year - be nice to all be together again.
I see it's bedtime now. Later, y'all.

Ah, another "letter from home" Love it. WLtoo will be fine. Hernia surgery is not a bad one, unless there are complications. You get sympathy and just take it easy and no problem. Tell him not to lift that Pecan cake! At least take a photo of it for us so we can drool. Your feast sounds to die for. Lucky chums you have. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

The pecan pie cake:

WLToo is doing just fine, now that he can sleep in more than one position. He spent most of the afternoon making chocolate chip cookies, which he will have to hide from the nephew tomorrow.
OAB and I have been trading "you gotta see this" videos this afternoon and evening. We're very easily amused... But this one you all should see: Riverdance at the Porta Potty
Been raining off and on all day, but it was warm, so Spotacus happily played outside, running in to shake it off on a human, then back out to dash about in the moisture. Alex just stayed inside, where he could be warm.
Leoghaire fooled at least two humans into feeding her today. Then WLToo got some photos of No Tail, a 10(?)-pointer that comes by sometimes. His rack is kinda odd looking, and we have no idea why he has no tail, but it's always entertaining when he comes to visit. Suddenly the doe races commence.
Time to wash dishes and get out the bone china for tomorrow.
Happy Thanksgiving, y'all.

Wow! You have to make a cake like that for the county fair! You're bound to win the blue ribbon. I think I put on three lbs just looking at it. Can you post a photo of the new guy, No Tail? I'm going to guess his was a breach birth and mom bit his tail off trying to help him get out of there. Hey, it happens with pups sometimes. Have a great holiday.

Glad that WLToo's surgery was a success. Happy Thanksgiving and thank you for that recipe.

Well, that cake was delicious, but way too rich for us, so I won't be making it again. Christmas will be pumpkin mousse and brownies with cinnamon and chipotle powder.
Two days before Thanksgiving, Sister lost her elderly dog, Scrappy. I posted a story about Scrappy back in this thread somewhere. She was such a sweet dog that Sister had for 16 years, and we guess Scrappy was 17 or 18. Sister rescued her as an adult. Nephew's cat, Monty, is mourning his BFF.
We've had so much rain that the pool overflowed again. All is green and lovely, with wildflowers even, so the doe herd doesn't come up to the house. Just Leoghaire. That's fine with us; we'd rather just feed her. She's looking more and more like her mama every day - just don't get any prettier.
Spotacus is lounging on the porch in the sun; Alex is on my lap-his natural habitat.
I had a cyst removed and now have 8 stitches. Between WLToo and myself, we aren't lifting anything heavier than Spotacus. No lights on the house, a tiny tree on a table, and a few miscellaneous lightweight decorations here and there will be the best we can do.
We have a scraggly little tree out by the road we call our Charlie Brown tree. We decorated it last year and it proved popular, so we'll do that again. It was funny watching the deer nose the red and gold balls to see if they were edible.
It's much too pretty to stay inside, so I'll go help WLToo with the gate garlands. Later, y'all.

Pumpkin or brownie anything are standouts in their own right. We're sorry about Scrappy: seems like she had a long and beloved life.

Thanks, magnusfide. Scrappy was a sweetie, even if she did bring out Alex' inner psycho cat when she visited here.
WLToo decided on Sunday evening to replace a bit of piping to the water softener. Didn't work. So we were without water to the house. Filled up the "survival" containers from the lawn hydrant that's upstream from the house connection so we could still flush, and let the dirty dishes pile up. Promptly ran out of alcohol hand sanitizer.
Nearly lunchtime and he hasn't got it fixed yet. Lesson learned: when he gets a plumbing DIY yen on Sunday or in the evening, scream "NOOOOOO!" And keep a larger supply of hand sanitizer in the pantry.
Gimpy and her fawn joined Leoghaire yesterday, but WLToo was using the air compressor in the garage and the noise had her too afraid to approach the corn dish. Leoghaire got it all. Leoghaire's started coming up on the porch and looking in the windows. No muzzle marks on the glass, though.
Woke up this morning to a deep throbbing in my stitches, but WLToo said all looks just fine. Must have laid wrong and irritated it a little. It's fine now. I'm a bit worried about him, though. He's not supposed to lift anything heavier than Alex for several more weeks, but he's doing projects in the garage. I'm thinking I'll go with him to the surgery follow-up tomorrow and tattle. He's such a guy...
WLToo just came in and said he's figured out an easier way to hook things back up, but has to go back to the hardware store because he bought the wrong size fitting. Still no water to the house. Sigh.
Our garbage company had to go out of business due to health reasons. None of the other companies servicing our area have returned our calls. Great. More phone calls in the offing.
Rant mode on: There's a whole weird attitude with the various trades around here, where they can't be bothered to return calls, even when they promise to get an estimate out within x hours/days. Doesn't happen. How do they expect to stay in business? Rant mode off
Oh, well, back to wrapping presents. Later, y'all.
