This morning, I heard the sound. Yep, Spot and the black cat were in an all out wrestling match. I went toward them, yelling, and they broke contact, but kept looking at each other. As I got closer and yelled at the black cat to go home, he turned and ran, Spot right on his tail. Spot stopped before the black cat went through the fence toward home, then slowly strolled back up the hill to me.

He's been alternately on watch and napping ever since, with a smug look on his face. He's not injured at all, so I'm thinking this first match was a no teeth no claws wrestle. Luckily, they're both about the same size, and Spot has very, very dense fur and tough tom cat skin, and I know from experience how hard he can bite, so this may go on for a while, until the black cat finally learns that our meadow is not his patrol area anymore.

Meanwhile, Bobbi had the sense to dash into the house as soon as the fight started, and Alex was somewhere else entirely. Everyone is sticking close to the house today, for some reason. Could be because the fox pooped on the driveway directly in front of the sidewalk again.

The fox is getting bold again, and we may wind up having to shoot it. I don't like it, but I don't like my cats being fox food, either.

Also on the bold wildlife side, Mama Doe saw WLToo holding an apple yesterday, and jumped over the fence to get it. WLToo tossed it into the grass as she jumped, and when she got close, he pointed to where it had rolled. She looked at his pointing arm and finger, then to where he was pointing, and went directly to the apple. Our neighbors feed the deer herd, so the whole herd is well fed and not afraid of us. We provide water and a mineral lick, and she knows where our compost pile is, but this is the first time we've ever seen a deer take directions...

I let the cats outside early this morning. A few minutes later, I heard Spot calling. He wanted me to come outside with him. As I came out, I heard lots of birds. Up on the power line was a line of small birds, with one large bird on the pole. The little birds were fussing at the big bird, and it reminded me of a Pixar short, "For the Birds."

Unlike the film, the big bird did not land in the middle of the small birds. That would have been very funny...

All those birds and all that commotion, and the cats never even looked up...they were watching Mama Doe and the fawns.

That's quite a crew you've got there, and not just the cats!

It's finally raining in the Hill Country. We're sitting around in shorts, with the house open, and I have Alex on my lap, Bobbi between my feet (recliner), and Spot on a bed in the window. It's kitty heaven around here.

Spot's taken to coming into the house to pee, then going back outside. This is new, but I've had lots of cats do that, and they all eventually get over it. I think it's part of his need to make sure he doesn't get left outside or abandoned again. Where Bobbi and Alex will wander about under our trees for a good long time, Spot will hardly leave the immediate house area.

He will play in the meadow with Bobbi, but as soon as she goes off to do her alone thing, he comes back to the house. I haven't seen the neighbor's black cat on our property in several days, but I've no doubt Spot will chase him off, then return to the house.

Well, time to doctor Alex' ear.

Spot and Bobbi came dashing back into the house this morning, and she showed little interest in going out again until afternoon. Just as I was getting ready to go to town, I noticed Spot's nose seemed to be bleeding. Closer inspection showed an upper lip gash and some hair pulled from below his left eye.

Spot's very protective of this property and Bobbi especially, so he'll get really dinged up unless we can dissuade the black cat. Not sure what to try next. Yelling doesn't work, he just chases rocks if we toss them near him, and BBs are too dangerous to a cat. Don't want to hurt him, just keep him off our place.

I’d place a few LOUD SPEAKERS along the fence line. And as soon as I see the fellow getting close. I’d turn the volume up to FULL BLAST and scare the pee out of him….[image]

...or I could loan you Calvin....[image]

PS If you do, Calvin want's to know how much you're gonna pay him?

What about spraying him with a hose? Most cats HATE water, so maybe that would work?

On five acres, that's not real practical. Would take ten hoses joined to get to the fence line, and by the time we started assembling them, the cat would have transited our property.

We discipline ours with a spray bottle, but it doesn't have the range to reach black cat - he doesn't come close to us humans.

Loud speakers would just cause the dog next door to go even more insane than he already is, not to mention the wire lengths required.

Besides, we have to take into account the deer in the meadow. Don't want to cause them to stampede or get injured.

What a conundrum...
