Here in PA we are starting to see more and more gas stations offering ethanol-free gasoline - 89 octane, mostly. My local station just started offering it yet. I haven't tried it yet but I will likely purchase it exclusively for use in my small engines (mower, generator, weed whacker, chain saws etc) starting with the next time I buy fuel.

Just bought a pair (2000i and companion). As much as they cost, I want them to last a long, long time. Bookmarking this post for future reference!

I just cleaned my Honda E2000. It was "searching" or loping along, had to set choke at 1/4 - 1/2 when a load was placed on it. I knew it was carb clean time. I picked up a guitar string at the local music store. I removed the main jet and venturi tube, sprayed with carb cleaner. Then I placed one end of the guitar string in a vise. One end there and one end of string free. I then ran the string thru the jet and tube. Holding one end of string I made like a zip line zip back and forth with jet and tube. Totally reemed them out, nice and clean, re-assembled, runs like a champ. I use only marine non ethanol gas in my generators, small engines. Juts wanted to share the guitar string theory.

Thanks for the great post. I usually do this when I put my genny away for the winter.

Today I got it out again, and it started like a dream, as usual. I ran it for about 30 minutes under load. When I lifted it up to put away I noticed a small puddle of gas underneath. I took the side panel off and started it up again. The leak appears to be coming from the joint between the air filter and the carb body. I looked at that gasket and it seems to be ok. I then removed the float chamber in case it wasn't properly seated and made sure it was ok and put it back. Started again and still leaking.

I wouldn't have expected there to be that much fuel in the carb throat. Any suggestions?

My first reaction would direct me to the needle/seat as I would guess it is not shutting off the flow of fuel as it should. You are correct that there should not be fuel between the carb body and air filter. I am surprised it ran well.

This is a great post.
My EU200i has been getting hard to start and when I pulled it out last week it wouldn't run without the choke on. Then it stopped running all together. All forums across many sites universally suggested it needed a carb clean. I was a bit intimidated because I generally get things apart and can't get them back together. No problem doing this project which immediately solved all my problems. Took about 30-45 minutes start to finish. The bowl was full of nasty grime and it appeared to have corroded a bit from the ethanol/water.

There are a couple of excellent Youtube videos that will help your confidence.

Lots of people suggest Seafoam and other carb cleaners. While those may help, if your generator isn't starting or running well why take a chance of it clogging all together when you are miles from home. If I can do this anyone can.

I am looking for a source of O-rings for the fuel bowl. I'd prefer to always replace O-rings whenever pulling them out and they should be dirt cheap. Didn't have one for this quick fix.

umpqua, if you feel strongly about the fuel bowl O-ring, I suggest searching ebay, and look for a bulk price. Personally, I have never had an issue with that ring. As I recall, it is above the fuel level. The only way it could leak is if the fuel lever is too high. If the fuel level is too high you adjust it. If you do not tinker with it, nothing wears that I am aware of that would change the fuel level.

I simply pull the pull dipstick, and rub oil on the ring. That probably is not needed, but my mechanical training has been to never install a dry rubber or rubber type seal dry. Oil, transmission fluid, anti-seize, vasoline, or any oil based lubricant.

I want to add another step to the process of fixing the lean running that can be overcome by running slightly choked....
If you clean the Emlusion tube and jet and still have the lean running try the following, or just add it to you carb cleaning steps to cure lean run.

I have seen this 1 other time and was actually no sure that what was done to fixed it until a couple of days ago. Wayne, "Reddog1" and I were attempting to fix his 2000I lean running problem. We took the carb apart and did the common fixes... Put it back together and still had the same problem.

We took the carb apart again and this time we plugged the intake and with a towel we wrapped a cloth around a air nozzle and blew air into the out put end of the carb.. We were attempting to force air back through the tiny ports in the venturi area/ around the throttle butterfly. There are 2 holes that are about .015.... and 3 .005 holes in a row about 3/4 in up from the output side of the carb.. Hard to see. You have to open the butterflies to see them.

I think using brake cleaner spray would work better if you can get the nozzle bent and against the holes...

So we cured his lean running... There was something in one of those holes probably the one below the butterflies on the output side of the carb..

Unbelievable ,, I took my carb apart and it looked clean as could be , didn't think cleaning it was going to work but I went ahead and bought some carb cleaner , I sprayed it through all the holes and soaked the jet for a couple hours , made sure everything was dry and put back together.
Fired it up and I couldn't believe it kept running !!!!!!
Thanks AISurffish
Forgot to mention , man that was easy , I don't use the red Honda case so basically unbolted the air filter , slide off the carb ,
Disassemble carb , spray , assemble.
