On October the 16th, 1947 Chuck Yeager broke the speed of sound. A week later he flew under this bridge and blew the windows out of banks and other offices facing the river. He is from Hamlin, WV not far from where we were earlier the morning of this trip report.

I was in the second grsade... my teacher was Miss Blair.... about 20 years before she was Chuck Yeagers second grade teacher.

Our main reason for coming to this area of Charleston is because Janet lived here when she was a very young with her parents and grand parents... during the last part of WWII. With the rationing and shortages a lot of people pulled together. Even at that the house was huge for 4 adults and a child..

The house is located just a few blocks from the Capital on Jackson Street. This is what the house and its neighbor houses looks like now... Janet lived in the house on the left, the Kemps lived in the middle and the Sneddons lived in the house on the right. Katherine and Elizabeth Sneddon were Janets best friends.

Our visit to the neighborhood brought back memories for days... janet is telling me thing about the house even now as I am writing this.

Maybe everyone should take their truck campers on a memory trip.

The Hensons... Janets room was toward the back. She says they had two full sized bath rooms on the second floor. She liked the pure white color of the old days too... no gray. Hydranges around the porch.... memories.

Property in the area when the houses were built was so valuable that they built houses this close.... and they are all much more than a 100 years old.

The dark brown house was the Sneddons... the guy that bought it from the Sneddon family 35 yeas ago saw us looking and came out, he talked with Janet about the fate of the family.

Janets grandfather Joe Henson, and Joe McCall had a business Eastern Garage... They built Midget race cars and the engines. Joe Border was the driver that tested the cars and raced until he broke his neck in an accident.... Janets dad, also Joe kept records, times, etc. They built race cars for AJ Foyt, Bobby Allison, and Jr... and a bunch more.

Janet grew up at Indy, Darligton, etc... and dirt tracks too.

The area on the left is where the garage was located on Elizabeth Street.
