There was a cable barge located here where you hoped that the barge would already be on your side of the river, you would step into the large flat bottom boat, go to the front of the boat (at least the front as pointed to where you wanted to go).... you'd hold on to the cable and walk to the back of the boat... propelling you forward... then you'd walk to the front again , grab the cable and repeat. Fun for a kid....
... since everyone was the operator and it didn't return until someone else needed to cross the opposite way... someone might have to swim accros to get the barge if people were in a hurry.
Good in the summer... not happening in the winter. And the ice would be too thin to walk on all the way accross.
The beach that you can see is made up of very nice sand. There was a commercial swimming beach there with a dance pavillion and honky tonk beer joint.

There is a lot of info here...

Did your external temperature transmitter die? I have the exact same clock/temp device. I went searching for a transmitter yesterday and all the internet sellers have the transmitter for that system on back order. One seller even will give you the option of being placed on a waiting list.
I just ordered another clock/temp device. "Tired of waiting".
Mine works, I just didn't put batteries in it for this trip. It is hard to secure it outside the camper in a way that water can't get to it and have the "clock" portion see it.
It's amazing that the clock is set by a signal from Colorado but the temperature sensor signals can't get through many csmper walls.
I test mine by putting the batteries in the sensor and leaving it on the bed in a direct line of sight to the clock.

We continued on to The Upper Falls area where Janets Great Grandfather Roberts had a water powered broom factory. It was long gone... and again the water was high enough from all of the rain that we couldn't even sse the water falls.
The places we passed through were Tornado, Alum Creek, Smith Creek, Spring Hill, and South Charleston... we were just looking at forty years of change... not always to the good.
We had no destination as usual but ended up in Kanawha Ciry, a part of Charleston. They were tearing down the old Watt Powell Park, home to the AAA Charleston Senetor base ball team in the late '50's and early '60's... Janet, her mother and grand mother didn't miss a home game for many years... ending with her grandmothers death in 1960. Memories...

A peek at the city across the Kanawha River. The red roofed building is the Kanawha County Court House.

The building in the distance is the train station... 55 years ago I boarded a train here heading for Loring AFB in Maine... it was the C&O Rail Road back then

I'll just bet that you are wishing that you were driving your truck camper up this ramp instead of me.... weren't you?
