We use an Atomic Clock, sometimes we are in 5 or 6 time zones during a trip. We try to keep the camper ar 70ºF... we plan on being comfortable. We have roughed it in tents, station wagons, truck campers... now we don't have to... and we don't.
There is a lot of info here...

Why is it staying the same temperture?
The thermostat controlled, vented PlatCat catalytic heater. If the temperaturein the camper drop to 67ºF the forced air furnace kicks on and helps the PlatCat... on the very coldest of nights so far the furnce only kicks on a couple of times for just a few minutes.
That along with the LEDs really conserves the batteries.

Nice system!! Are the solar panels, meters etc all available as a package or did you have to design and put it together yourself? Do you have a favorite source?
I need to research this.

I had a guru looking over my shoulder...
The more "packaged" your system, the more limited your outcome.
I posted everything to Truck Camper University-Projects/Repairs/Replacements & Tips
Many others have too.
My suggestion is for you to read these reports,
That way you will learn different peoples actual experiences and you can avoid those people that have never done the project that you are interested in but in reality only pretend to actually know what they are talking about.
Good luck, if you decide to pursue any of the projects it might be good to PM the people that impress you or to start a thread dedicated to that subject.
My trip report is so scattered that we'd never find a common thread long enough to learn anything useful.
I'm glad it got you thinking though

WE got a break the next morning... I grew up playing in Coal River.... especially around lower falls. It seems to be washed out or flooded

Did your external temperature transmitter die? I have the exact same clock/temp device. I went searching for a transmitter yesterday and all the internet sellers have the transmitter for that system on back order. One seller even will give you the option of being placed on a waiting list.
I just ordered another clock/temp device. "Tired of waiting".
