Today the wife and I bought a nice kennel cage with a pad for Old Fellow's homecoming Monday. Izzie the cat has been walking around it trying to figure out what's up. Levi knows something is about to happen but can't figure it out yet. We plan to keep Old Fellow inside as much as possible at first to give his face and ears a chance to heal and also to keep him quiet for another two weeks. In a month Dr. Gradous wants to see him again to see how he is doing with the heart worms. He is such a nice fellow and accepting of all the treatment he has been given with humility.
I hope the ride home Monday goes well for him and he dosen't get stressed out. But we will just have to wait and see. The kennel has done a great job in taking care of him and he has grown fond of the ladies there. I think he believes the kennel is his forever home. I know he sure likes it there. The move Monday I hope will be his last one for a long time. He deserves a good home with and endless supply of TLC. I believe that this was suppose to be and we have been blessed by the events that have brought us this far. Monday just won't get here fast enough.

It might not be a bad idea for all to meet on neutral ground. Just a thought.

The only problem with neutral ground is Izzie. Izzie won't travel at all! He is so attached to the house he panics if he thinks he is going anywhere. He wants to go outside, but ony if the screen door is left ajar so he can get back in when he gets scared and he gets scared a lot. What is so strange is Izzie was a stray when we got him at about four weeks old. Levi found him and brought him home, literally. When we get the carrier out to take him to the vet or kennel, he hides so we can't find him. The only neutral ground for Izzie is home turf.
I believe they will all get along just fine together. Izzie has seen his carrier setting out since this morning with a postage stamp on it!

Cats do not "do" neutral ground. They are very attached to their turf, much more than dogs, and will be distressed if removed from it. To them its not neutral ground, its no-man's land and dangerous. But kitty-boy will likely accept the newcomer into his turf once he's convinced he won't be eaten. And Old Fellow will understand what "no" means if he's inclined to chase.
Hopefully he's not, though. Has he been exposed to cats in the hospital? And what was his reaction? Hopefully he won't be so excited as to endanger his recovery.
If he'll stay quietly in his crate, the kitty can get accustomed to his presence while feeling protected. Then he can be let out on leash and kept quiet, and so on until they are comfortable and safe in the same room. Some hissing and spitting is to be expected. Some curiosity and even excitement from the dog is to be expected. But a dog that's lived on his own is smart enough to figure this all out, I promise. I've been through it repeatedly with dogs not nearly as old and wise and if they got it, so will Old Fellow. Key is maintaining physical control to avoid any violence, and gently but firmly making it clear to both parties what is and is not acceptable.

Well I am looking forward to Monday and finding out how Old Fellow does coming home. I understand about Izzie. We have a bit of a problem with a couple of old cats that don't like change either. We've cancelled a fall vacation because of them. What do we do with an old girl going on 20 who does not like the car, and another diebetic 17 year old cat, who hates going anywhere beyond her patio.
Anyway I am anxious about monday. My thoughts will be with you, your wife,Izzy, Levi and Old Fellow...Barb

The count down begins and I really don't know what to expect. I think I am more anxious than Old Fellow will be. Being free and on his own for all those years he may not like what we have to offer here, but I am going to keep an open mind. The one thing that bothers me is, will he stay put in our fenced back yard or has he become an escape artist? I have had two dogs in this back yard and neither has gotten out, but then they didn't want to either. I plan not to let him out by himself for a while so I can keep and eye on him.
I will pick him up from the kennel tomorrow at lunch time and bring him straight home. I will take pictures of him with his new family and post them as soon as I can.
