Dixie Flyer ... one thing is certain, Old Fellow is a wise one. He has seen much in his life and he has probably endured things we can only imagine. He has to be very clever and adaptable to have done so. He also seems to be quite low-key, probably not too excitable about too many things. I expect even your kitty will not an issue for him. He's had to accommodate many things in his life and I suspect a cat will not be something he gets too excited about. And he probably reads folk quite well, from the comments the people at the campground made.

Like most loners, he probably enjoys the quiet times and simple pleasures. Sitting with you is hanging with the pack. He likely also enjoys a little space, so he doesn't feel crowded or overwhelmed by events.

As I said before, he's a wise old man with great dignity. Regal in his bearing, old and tired as it is.

I think you are getting one of those very special dogs that has the ability to touch one's heart at the deepest level. One of those canines that has an uncanny way of knowing more than we do and expresses it in oh-so-subtle ways.

How very privileged you are that he is willing to share the rest of his life with you.

Have you broken the big news to.............the cat? [emoticon] I have a feeling everything will be fine.

I wonder if he's scared of storms and lightning--he's probably been out in some, and I'll bet he is. One of our dogs was afraid of them, but enjoyed being in the dark closet with the door cracked, so she couldn't see the flashes. The thunder was bad enough. Sometimes one of us stayed in there with her for a bit.

This is the best thread I've ever read on the Forum--so heartwarming, with so many good people posting.

How thoughtful your words are and how true. Today as we were sitting together I got the sense that he was measuring me up on side and down the other. He was making up his mind whether or not we were going to be soul mates. For a brief moment it was as if I could feel his thoughts and acceptance. Regal is the word I would use for his statue as he walks around with that tail and head held high. It is as if he knows he is special and I think he is too from the first time I saw him. He will teach me a lot about humility and wisdom, I hope I am a worthy student.

This has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done in my life and this thread has made it all possible. Thanks to all those who cared and responded with their words and gifts.

By the way, Izzie the cat is about to get a real education from a very wise old dog!!

I got a PM this morning from a former Ranger at the park where Old Fellow stayed. I ask that she post it to the thread so everyone could read about the early days of Old Fellow and her experience with him. I hope she does.

It is rumored that Old Fellow has been around Modoc for about 5 years. There is no telling what he has seen in his time. The bad thing is, there is no leash law or type of animal control in McCormick county. They did recently start a Humane Society, but funding and space is very limited. If you do witness someone abandoning a pet, please, please notify the police and the rangers. It is considered abandonment of property on Federal land which is a no-no, and it can be charged as animal cruelty which in some states now is a felony.

I have recently started writing senators and congressmen to harshen the penalties for animal neglect and cruelty, and to enforce leash laws strictly. I always stress that these laws actually are helpful to the general well being of the public. If pets were not neglected and forced to endure abuse and horrid conditions, you would not read so often about the dog that mauled the neighbors kid. Also, SPAY and NEUTER!!!! My heart just can't take seeing those sad little faces on the side of the road or shivering in the woods wishing they were warm and had full bellies. If I win the lotto, I will buy about 700 acres and they can all just stay with me!

good luck Dixie Flyer and Old Fellow! I am so happy you are doing well.

Saving an unwanted pet's life is so rewarding. The cat that we adopted from a shelter when he was a year old is our absolute pride and joy. He is afraid of loud noises, but I figured that came from life on the street for a couple of months as a kitten (he was a stray). He likes his time with us, but he also likes his "alone" time to sit and think. Anyway, just wanted to say that we have really enjoyed this story, and it is by far my favorite RV.net post of all time!!!! God bless you and Old Fella, he is one lucky dog.

This story as it unfolds has been a real "page turner" and irresistible. Continued good luck and happiness to you, Rich and Old Fellow. Some of us have had a similar experience of rescuing what turned out to be a "heart" dog or cat. Maybe we can start another thread later with those stories. I've got a good one. Suffice it to say that sometimes when you look at a certain dog or cat, you don't see an animal at all. You see a whole being, heart/soul/intelligence. It's as if you are looking at another person and a very special one at that. When it happens, it's magic. Congratulations on being so honored.

...who would have thought that your simple question at the end your first posting would generate sufficient interest (like viewed over 5700 times--I know I am guilty of at least 6 views)...and the little guy is still not out of the woods![emoticon]
