No he is not ready for adoption yet. He still has a long way to go before we can get to that point. So far he has not shown any signs of being aggressive, but being part Chow that puts a mark on him. If all else fails his home will be with us. I am hoping that someone will step up and give him a home as we already have two pets. I don't know how he would get along with the cat. The cat is my wife's pride and joy and nothing will upset that relationship. My question is, can you house train a dog who has been left to himself all those years? To be able to fit into our life style he will have to learn to travel and be obedient. I'm not saying it can't be done but I have my doubts. I want to give him every chance in the world to have a great life and not be placed in the position of pressure of asking him to be something he could never be. But I made this promise to him. He will never again have to sleep out in the cold without shelter and he will never again go hungry and he will never again be abused.

I just received by PM a pledge for $20.00 for Old Fellow from a local person who had seen Old Fellow in the campground back in July. Every contribution helps, thanks so much.

I will ask the question again. Do you think it is possible to take a dog like Old Fellow and train him at his age and what he has been through to be house broken?

The answer to house breaking is yes. Dogs do not want to soil their area and you can start by confining him to an smaller area in the house. We became the companions of a 7 1/2 yr old female who had been in a reputable kennel for breeding. She was most of her life in a kennel area with access to outdoor and indoor was a kennel building with concrete floors. She figured out pretty quick about the waiting to go outdoors. She had a few "accidents" in far reaches of the house to begin with, but settled in and is no trouble unless we give her access to the basement which she cannot seem to see as part of her house. If you have a crate or cage, I would start with that as he is getting used to being in one at the vet.
The chow in him can be pretty well mediated by the other mixes. He might be wary of strangers and will need good obedience training to give him the reassurance that you are in charge and will decide on the need to cahllange any stranger. Use of great treats such as cut up hotdogs will be a great training aid. Puppies learn the fastest, but all dogs can learn new tricks!!

I do. It will take some patience, This animal has not survived this long being dumb and he will want to do whatever pleases his new friend. He does not look like he has a lot of chow in him but some. We took in an untrained lab. First thing he did was figure out where we went to the bathroom and sure enough that's where he went. It was tough but I am so happy we stuck through it, he has rewarded us many times over.

I do think it's possible. The vet no doubt can give whoever adopts him some help on how to do this, especially with an older dog.
It might be easier than you think. I hope so!

Behaviorial modification...think simple, be presistent, reward with love, and those black moist noses will catch on to the new game, since everyday with you is a new day for the "old fella"!
How much is the vet bill so far?

Dr Gradous hasn't told me about the bill yet. He kept Old Fellow off the ledger for billing this past week so he could consider the expenses. He and I will get together today and discuss the treatment so far and the cost. I think he is going to discount last week's bill by 50%. Today Old Fellow goes into the accounting system as an official patient of the clinic and the bills will start adding up. The board bill was wavered for the past week which was $13.00 per day. However that bill starts today.
Dr Gradous would not even acknowledge he had the dog last week so that he would not have to report him as being there. Sometimes he is a strange man and I don't understand his logic but he is the greatesr vet I have ever known and he loves what he does. He is seventy years old and still going strong. Today I will get a better idea of the cost for Old Fellow's tretament. So far I have received $75.00 in the mail and a promise of $20.00 to be given by credit card to Dr. Gradous.

Those eyes are so sad and maybe too wise to the ways of some people. But with good care, food, and love we will see a different picture in a few months. I think you are right not to try to stress him with the obedience necessary to live in a household. I personally think he probably does not need to travel as he has been free and on his own most of his life. He probably would roam away from you.
You never said about his early life. He may have been a pet at one time and take to household living. Hope so.
Oh, I am calling the vet today and will donate a little to help on the expenses. I hope everyone on this forum will do what they can.
We are are animal lovers and don't forget the little ones left over from Katrina. I have a feeling there will be a lot more 'Old Fellas'.
