Regarding the post reply concerning the maintenance costs of Ford PSD, that's why I bought a Cummins. I pay in the vicinity of $15 for the air filter, and about $10 for a fuel filter - both WIX brand. Both compare favoribly to equivalent costs for a big block gas motor. In terms of paying $5000 more for the diesel option, that's questionable. If you take a 3/4 ton ie GM the standard motor is likely a 5.3. If you add the cost of the upgrade to the 6.0, or the upgrade to an 8.1/Allison I suspect the difference is about $3000. My truck is driven about 10,000 miles per year and about 5,000 miles are towing. I have kept a spread sheet of my miles driven, fuel cost, and mpg. I have columns next to it for same prior gasser. I did this since this is my first diesel, I wanted to know "operating cost" vs same prior gasser. I save $700 per year in fuel costs. If I was driving 20,000 miles per year and 1/2 of that towing I'd save $1400 annually. Is it going to take me 80,000 miles to "break even" for added cost of diesel engine, not hardly. Are diesels the preference for everyone towing....no. For me it works.

I do not have 625 posts on the first page of this thread. If there is more than one of mine on that page, feel free to read them all.

For johnnyo4.....
What mpg did you get when pulling that 21' trailer? And, what did it weigh? I just bought a Duramax & will be pulling a 4200# TT. I didn't buy the diesel for the power, but for the fuel mileage. I used to get 10-11mpg on my '02 Silverado with a 5.3 & 3.73 axle. I'm getting an average of 20 1/2 to 23 on the Duramax bare at 60mph, with only 1,000 miles on it. Hope to get 15 or better pulling the TT.

Quote: Roadfrog - My apologies. I did not intend to offend you, but when I saw the two posts saying basically the same thing about turbos and the second one throwing the torque vs HP argument in, it certainly looked like a troll to me.
Apology accepted. Just to note, my post repeating my argument was explained. I responded to this thread a day or so ago and then this thread was linked from thedieselstop.com and I jumped in with a response before I realized that it was the same post.
Anyway, I'm hunting down the data. Stay tuned.

Quote: I was looking at the specs for an 04 Burb and, inspite of the fact that the 6l develops more power (325HP) than the 8.1l (320HP) in that vehicle
Found it. I bet 100% of the people with 8.1 Suburban/Yukon XL's will disagree with you that the 6.0 V8 has more power than the 8.1 including GM since it gives the 8.1 a 3000 lb towing advantage over the 6.0.

Ok so someones peronal experiance of a $700 gas savings per year. Take into acount 10K miles so two oil changes and that is probably only a $600 difference. I was paying $23 to get my gassers oil changed, I just todat payed $79 to get my PSD's oil changed. Add in and oil and fuel filter every other year (at 15K vice 30K for a gasser), $550 difference. Will take 8 years to pay for the deisel option. Now people are going to say deisels resale is higher, that is a no brainer they sell brand new for higher so I would expect resale to be higher. What is the net percentage that a vehical goes down in value I would bet they are kind of close. I personally have been seeing more and more gassers on the road in my area. I believe this is because of some of the pains of owning a diesel. My Dad drives deisels for company vehicals and owns a V10 for personal use, why? Because he does not think the deisel is all it is cracked up to be.
Mind you I do own a PSD and love it I wish I would have found a thread like this prior to buying it though. Someone earlier asked what people were towing with thier trucks I tow a 24FT Cuddy Cabin boat checking in at a weighed 8200lbs with the gas and gear in it. Also put a 8FT Lance Lite Camper in it. Don't slow down on hills like I used to but then again I was running a strait six but it pulled all this******just very slowly.
As to spark plugs in a gas engine, diesel guys how often do glow plugs need changed? I know older 7.3 PSD's it was every 100K or so and it was pricey (speaking of my Dad's company truck).
As to the Surburban comment. How many guys driving Suburbuns would have bought a diesel instead of the 8.1 if GM offered it so not a fiar comarison.

Joe (PSDExcursion)- You obviously love your $50,000 Excursion with the Diesel engine. Great. But why is it your obsession to play up diesel engines like it is some kind of religion? I own alot more of them than you and I really can't generate the same excitement about them (or gassers) as you. They have their place but they certainly have their drawbacks. And no, everyone who does not drive one is NOT some kind of idiot.
You've got a Diesel Excursion and you live in the garden state of New Jersey. Lucky you.

Resale value is about a wash as I've seen it. The up-front diesel tarrif is close to 10% over that of a BB gas truck of same. If the gas truck, and they do, retains a like percentage of value then where is the payback? In fact, where is it someone saves money at all by trading in their truck. Seems to me the used trucks keep depreciating while the new ones keep going up. They're not like most homes. The outlay on a new truck wipes out any ongoing savings from the previous one.
I see quite a few BB GM trucks in our area, perhaps as many or more than D-Max powered units. Ford's PSD seems to be perhaps more popular than their V10 or 5.4 powered units in their Super Duties. I see a lot of Dodge CTD units. I can't say I see too many V10 units anymore but then I understand a larger version of their Hemi is on the way to cover than arena. It's either CTD or 5.9 Dodges.
To each their own.
