It is funny hove som people have to have every thing proven to them. I had a 7.3 and Edge tuner, I said I don't need that with my gasser lot more powerful and faster, is there a limit to what it can pull yes but that is also the case with the 7.3. Believe what you want.

It's not the fact of how much it can pull. It's the fact of how easy it pulls it.

Just returned from a short trip to Fort Desoto Park with the 5th wheel. The little gasser had no trouble keeping up with traffic. Nothing to prove. Just had a great relaxing week with no worries or truck issues.

Just as a followup, I have to say diesel rocks, especially as an alternative to a "big block" v8. Massive torque allows not only for strong pulling uphill, but great engine braking downhill. Mileage while towing is great too. The turbo allows for full power at altitude. There really is no downside, other than initial expense.

Downside is the weight. I have a gas engine in part because the diesel version has almost 1,000 lbs less payload capacity and I need all the carrying capacity I can get.

I guess it depends. The Mercedes and Jeep diesels only add about 200lbs to curb weight (mostly due to all the silly US urea injection crap), and payload is identical.

That sure is a lot of payload reduction for an engine that weighs 300~lbs more than the Hemi.

You shouldn't have too much trouble keeping up with traffic with an about 8,500# 5er on flat ground (weight a guess 7,140 dry, 10,000 GVWR)if you tow mostly flat that will and should work for you.

Some don't need diesel, some do!

I disagree. Nobody "needs" diesel. Some just want it, can afford it, and like it. Gas engines will get you anywhere a diesel can.

My next truck will be a diesel 4x4 without a doubt. But not because I "need" it. I'm just at a place in my life now (kids out of college, nearing retirement, etc.) that I can afford to pamper myself a bit.

If I don't like the diesel I'll go back to gas. That decision will be made in the next few years.

If somebody was to put a ~5 liter turbocharged gasoline engine in a 1-ton for significantly less upgrade price than the diesel that is probably the way I'd go. With a modest 8 psi of boost it would act like a 7.5 liter at sea level even on the higest mountain pass. It wouldn't get the miles per gallon of a diesel, but the cost per mile would be close enough for me.
