signalmaintainer, You will get a better response if you initiate a thread but where I would be looking is on rvsearch.com rvtrader.com and ebay.

I would look in Arizona, Florida, and Texas in the Spring. Especially when the widows are trading in the MH due to the other half passing on. May sound morbid, but it is the truth.

Howdy all, I'm the new kid on the block and just purchased a 1979 Travelcruiser motor home, and was wondering if anyone can help me with any information about this fine road beast. She came with no manal, and some of the knobs are so worn out that I cannot read what they say. Afraid I will pull a knob and the whole rearend will hit the street. Hope someone can help. Cyber space is not much help.[emoticon]

Thank you for this very thorough posting. I have never bought an rv, and I am scared to death. There are so many mistakes that impulse buying can lead to. For me, it will be a long term investment, and I want to be as informed as possible.

The info has been great as we are a new class A owner as well. We purchased a 1985 Foretravel 38' and have been doing a total renovation in the last 6 months. My question right now is I do not understand about the tag axle and my husband doesn't really either. My main question is. We just purchased 8 new goodyear Rv tires for the MH and they are all at 90 lbs, But the original manual from the MH manufacter states that the tag axle should be no higher PSI then 70. So which is it? Do we lower the tag axle tires to 70 psi and drive with it that way or do we do what the tire states and that is 90 psi so they are not under inflated. I do know that the tag axle is not to be the load bearing axle.
Any answers would be greatly appreciated and most welcome.
Thanks in advance,
Debbie

After going through three coaches, we finally applied the approach you illustrate. After deciding on trading for the third coach, we had the coach in mind we wanted. We intended to order a new one upon my retirement but the dealer called and told us he had the model we were looking for he took on a trade. It was less than a year old with less than 6K miles. It saved us about 30K over the new cost so we traded early.

Your point of buying, then trading up is a very expensive route to take. I know because we took it. Find what you want and can afford and go after it. Thanks for a very informatie article.

Tremendous education effort. Although I have 32.5 foot Dreamcatcher mated with a 3500 RAM quad cab Cummins diesel dually, I have been evaluating upgrading to a 40 Class A RV. I like the Newmar Dutch Star 40 foot three slide 400 hp Cummins at this point, but am only exploring the market at this point.

What a great thread!! Just had a bit of helpful info for new and experienced buyers of a motorhome. We bought our first motorhome (Monaco MonarchSE 36DBD) a year ago. It is a gasoline powered coach with 2 slides. We love it! A couple of things to consider when getting ready to sign. There are 2 types of RV "sales" that I saw when looking. One offered a very low interest rate and the other was a substantial reduction in price at a higher interest rate. Both would lead to similar monthly payments. It is better to take the lower price at the higher interest rate because your interest is deductible and you can deduct a larger portion of your yearly RV payments. Also, as in buying a car, if you wait until the next years models are out and there are not too many of the current year models around, you can get a great price reduction. We bought ours in August. The cheapest we had seen the model we wanted in the months before that was around $120000. We ended up paying $89000 for it, got 6 months with no payments, and a $500 gas card as they were very motivated to get it off the lot. Good luck on your purchase!!!

I am too sleepy to read the posts on this interesting topic (it's 0430) and I don't have a motorhome, but thought I'd pass this along.

There is a terrific Pre-Delivery Inspection checklist on the link at the bottom of my post. I used it when I inspected my FW, but it was written by a motorhome purchaser. It's a TERRIFIC checklist. I spent 3 hrs going over my FW and found a couple of pages of faults. Most were very minor, but still would have resulted in the FW going back to the dealer within a month or two for who knows how long.

So, if I were going to get a new/used rig of any kind, I'd print a copy of that checklist first.

Enjoy. Maybe someday there will be a big ol' diesel pusher in my future!

Is there anyway to live near a big city and still have plenty of elbow room (30 minutes drive time)? I have two dogs that bark, want to live in an RV and work in a big city. I can afford land and septic out in the country but can't afford land near a big city.

Right now total operating costs including taxes, electric, water, and Insurance is about $11 per day for my home. I need a economical solution before I purchase a rv. Any ideas?
