Please excuse the newbie question --
Are these braking systems (such as EvenBrake) just for towing with all four wheels down or are they also used when using a dolly? (Recognizing that they would only be applying brakes to the toad's rear wheels in that case, of course.)

Tow dolly's usually have their own electric brakes so the need for the additional system is not there as opposed to it being needed when the vehicle is towed with all 4 wheels down. If the tow dolly does not have brakes they should be added to the dolly.

P.S. Though this is a very informative thread read often by new members directed to it, few of the older members regularly monitor it much anymore. Therefore it is more suited for the information it contains than for the posting of new questions. I'd use a new thread in the future when asking questions. [emoticon]

Great Thread! Wish it was up and running when I was looking for a solution.

I ultimately settled on the M&G system. I was a design engineer for most of my career and I thought the M&G solution was simple and elegant (what every engineer wants from every design). I have had the system installed on a 1999 Lexus RX 300 which we use as a tow. It works perfectly every time, requires no adjustment, no put in/take out, is absolutly proportional (the factory matches spring rates for your vehicle), and significantly helps stop the MH. I would recommend this solution to everyone. Downside is that not all toads can be equipped due to space constraints under the hood.

HI Mad4Golf!
Thanks for the info...where can I see this M&G system online? Do I need a specialist for installation? What is the cost?

Thanks! [emoticon]

Indeed the M&G system looks good 'till you have to deal with the "breakaway system". Did you add that?

I had the M&G system installed at a dealer listed on M&G's web site in Riverdale, GA. I was there about 4 hours with Motor home and Suburban. It took one man about 20 minutes to put on the motor home part and another about 3 hours to do the Suburban. I did have the break away option installed. I have traveled about 1500 miles with the system and it is working perfect. No brake lines were disconnected during installation on the Suburban. Cost about the same as a Brake Buddy ($1100 with tax and install) and is so much easier traveling without the box in the floor. It takes about 3 seconds to hook up or disconnect.
I had a Brake Buddy for three years and it worked OK but was such a hassle to put in and take out. It also rattled when you put it in the back of the Suburban when not using.
I was unhooked from the motorhome for 4 days and decided to pull the break away pin on the Suburban to see if the air had leaked out of the M&G system. To my surprise the brakes applied on the Suburban.
I think I am going to love the system after having 4 different systems over the years nothing compares to the M&G after only 1500 miles. Hope I feel the same after 50,000 miles.

I have installed a unified tow brake system i a 98 exploer. its not as easy as they show you on the dvd. I think the unit works well it is adjustable, and it is supplying vacuum for power brakes. The next step or upgrade would to be able to power up the ABS system in the vehicle. I am working on this now. except for the poor dvd i think is the way to go on tow car

pulsar,

The US Gear web site has changed. The URL is now .cc instead of .com

Thank you CA Traveler. It is hard to keep a check on all of the links. Actually, the www.usgear.com URL is still active; however, my link was to the Unified Tow Brake page, which, as you point out, uses '.cc' instead of '.com'

I have made the change.

Thanks, again,

Tom
