Well I've used Roadmaster's BRAKEMASTER for going on well let's say since they came out years ago. Only thing I ever had to do or get for it was new hook up for a new car. I refer to her as GOOD OLE RELIABLE.... I freaking love it...

I just returned from my first trip (1400 miles) with the Even Brake proportional braking system. I found it to work very well after I found the right setting.
At first, I experienced the "lock on" as reported. The brakes did't release right away! It happened only on the first brake application after set-up. When I changed the setting; Force to low and Sensitivity to low, I no longer had this happen.
I changed the settings because I could feel the toad (06 Honda C-RV - 3400 lbs.) "tugging" as brakes were applied. At the new setting, what I feel is the momentary slight "push" of the toad on the RV (vs. toadless). Then the red light on the monitor shows braking and the "push" stops. The toad brakes evenly and in proportion to my RV. I tried soft, medium and heavy braking. The Even Brake responded accordingly. I was very impressed!
It did not run down the battery during the two week trip. Installing and uninstalling the system now takes about 5 minutes. I have to wait ~5 min. for my CRV to idle as per mfg. reccommendations anyway. I install the system while it idles. The peace of mind in having a working braking system far outways any minor inconvenience in set-up.
There is a concern in the design of the pedal clamping system. The lock holding the claw tight on the brake pedal has loosened a couple of times. This didn't affect my braking as the larger bottom clamps still hold it to the brake pedal. My concern is the brake pedal pushing on the lock to spring it open. I'd like to see a more secure clamp. In the meantime, I'm very careful to fully engage the lock and position it where the pedal has an indentation in the rubber.

Ron....did you have any problems equipping your CRV for towing.? I just purchased a 2006 CRV 2WD EX. I read somewhere online last night that there have been problems in equipping these for towing. Have you had any? What tow bar system are you using?
I currently have a 1996 Saturn SL1 that we have been towing since '03. No problems with it. Am now ready to upgrade.....
Thanks.....

I went with the Blue Ox base plate. It looks a lot nicer. It's almost invisible! I chose the Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain tow bar. It impressed me with the non-binding and stow features. It comes with the Blue Ox ears (dif. part #). It is a great pairing.

Just installed the EvenBrake system in our 2003 Jeep Wrangler, the folks at Roadmaster were helpful with a question about the proper wire color code on the Jeep brake switch. The installation went without a problem and the system worked well with the settings on medium. Took a 400 mile round trip journey to SE OKlahoma with the Jeep in tow and everything worked as it should. Did not notice any loss of battery voltage after making a five hour return trip.
We are well pleased with the operation of the system and the ease to install and remove.

I purchased the Night Shift Auto Ready Brake system about 3 years ago and love it. It works great i paid $442.00 but i noticed recently they dropped the price down to $290.00 and put a lifetime guarantee on the Ready Brake. There monitoring system hooks directly up to the brake pedal switch it is hardwired i mean it uses a wire that runs across your towbar and under your motorhome and hooks into the dashboard of the motorhome. I have never had any problems with it.

To Pulsar-
Thank you so much for doing this! I was just talking to DH about getting a supplemental brake system and now we have good basic info to study.
To All--
Questions:
1. Does it matter if the tow vehicle has ABS brakes?
2. Are there any other considerations that we should be aware of?
3. What about installation -- we are NOT do-it-yourselfers?
4. Is there any place, i.e.RV Shows? where we can see some or all of these devices in action?
I know I have a lot more questions, but I just don't know enough to know what to ask!..thanks for your help.

onthecoach,
As to your first question, Generally ABS systems play no role in the decision. ABS systems are active only when the engine of the toad is on. As I recall, the M & G Tow Brake has an installation problem with a certain type of ABS system. The M & G system also requires that the toad have power brakes.
A suggestion, start a new thread with your questions. This particular thread doesn't get monitored by the regulars in Dinghy Towing.

Please excuse the newbie question --
Are these braking systems (such as EvenBrake) just for towing with all four wheels down or are they also used when using a dolly? (Recognizing that they would only be applying brakes to the toad's rear wheels in that case, of course.)
