Reading comprehension is thin in this thread apparently. As the OP very clearly stated that both times it was after he stopped completely…..I’m sure the rest of your stories are cool like having your wheel lugs shear off. But how does that help the OP?

Unique question from OP, so we're all just trying to offer suggestions. The post did mention "jolt from the rear". You suggested torque converter which is in the front. Nothing wrong with sharing unique problems and solutions that may in fact assist the OP. He could have a loose shackle/shock that just happens to relocate after applying brakes to full stop (another suggestion).

My 07 Toyota Tacoma with 67K miles on it bumps forward after sitting at a complete stop for 10 to 15 seconds. It resembles the bump you would feel if it was in neutral then with your foot on the brake you put it in drive. Haven't found an answer to that one. It doesn't have a dip stick to check the trans fluid, weird. A friend of mine who ran a trans repair business for 35 yrs once told me that torque converters can do weird things. My 06 GMC Duramax, once it sits for over a week in the garage, when you first start it will not move once you put it in gear, it takes a few seconds. My tranny guy said drive it more often. 110K miles presently.

True, but I identified the TC as a highly potential source of this mysterious “bump” since the other suggestions can’t really do that if it’s sitting at rest (presumably in gear).
And if the TC were to lock/unlock or potentially some other component of the transmission, like the valve body and a late shift back to 1st gear after the vehicle is stopped, the first point of resistance, causing the thump that is felt would be at the rear diff because the brakes are keeping it from spinning.

Thinking about it more, it’s likely a late shift back into 1st gear after stopped. I had a truck in the last that did this randomly and you could feel it or course. Don’t remember if it was a Ford but likely was as I had at least a dozen of them during the Triton engine era.

Try this, when it’s doing it, I suspect it’s not every stop so it may seem random, manually run it down into 1st gear before stopping, every stop and see if it goes away.

Guys,

I am uncomfortable recommending that the OP continue to drive UNTIL the issue is diagnosed. Sure, could be minor, but would hate to see a component failure lead to loss of control with recommendations to keep on driving.

Well a quick crawl under it will reveal a major structural issue or broken suspension. However there’s a very low likelihood that it’s something like that if it handles fine on the road and then has a little indeterminate thump while stopped. Period.
OP hasn’t been great about replying or adding to the thread. Repeatability is a big part of diagnosis and so far it appears to have happened only twice, yet hard to believe the rig only stopped twice in the last however many miles.
Another suggestion besides manually downshifting if it’s repeatable at multiple stops. (This can literally be done at low speeds in their subdivision or a desolate road ) is kick it into neutral before coming to a stop and see if the thump goes away.

These questions are still unanswered.
Did this happen as your started to move forward from a dead stop ? Was it due to movement ?
