This analysis suggests that a bat coronavirus obtained the furin cleavage site on the S protein during early human-to-human virus transmission as it adapted for infecting humans.
Evidence-based analysis of the SARS-CoV-2 furin site origin
Research Square preprint 29 Apr 2022
Quote: Abstract
The origin of the SARS-CoV-2 is still unclear. Simply said, its emergence is due to the acquisition of the polybasic furin cleavage site on the S protein in one of its closest relatives. The recent discovery in Laos of bat Rhinolophus coronaviruses that contain receptor binding domains almost identical to that of SARS-CoV-2, and despite not having the furin site, they can therefore infect human cells (1), is the cornerstone to identify the SARS-CoV-2 progenitor. However, it is not yet known where the insertion of the furin site at the S1/S2 junction in the S protein of the pandemic virus came from. Not only from where, but also how and when of such acquisition. The most surprising was: (i) that the polybasic furin cleavage site is unique to SARS-CoV-2 among Sarbecovirus (2), and (ii) that the inserted four amino acid motif has a CGG-CGG encoded arginine pair which is rare in coronaviruses (3). So, my question is if the SARS-CoV-2 insert in the S gene insert would match to human transcripts. Here, I address this issue by using NCBI and GISAID databases, the NCBI Human Genome Resources, sequence analysis tools and in-house developed bioinformatic tools. I found that the 12-nucleotide insert encoding SARS-CoV-2 furin site 100% match to several human transcripts. Taken together the presence of these human transcripts and the expression patterns their genes, results provide insight into human potential recombination link to SARS-CoV-2 furin cleavage site, during undetected human-to-human virus transmission. Other PRRA-like insertions in the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein are shown.

I found this article interesting. Apparently in WI data suggests that 42% of recent deaths from Omicron variant were people who were vaccinated.

I am posting this study because of the common misunderstanding of the data from this system. The deaths listed in this system following Covid-19 vaccination are for all causes of death.
Reporting Rates for VAERS Death Reports Following COVID-19 Vaccination, December 14, 2020-November 17, 2021
MedRxiv preprint May 07, 2022
Quote: VAERS is a national vaccine safety surveillance program that was established in 1990 and is co-managed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and FDA (10). VAERS serves as a hypothesis-generating, early warning system that scientists at FDA and CDC use to detect unusual or unexpected patterns of adverse events (also known as “safety signals”) that warrant further investigation (11, 12). As a passive reporting system, VAERS relies on individuals reporting adverse events after vaccination. Anyone can submit reports to VAERS, including patients, family members, healthcare providers, and vaccine manufacturers (13). No proof that the event was caused by the vaccine is required for VAERS to accept the report (14). Serious and unexpected medical events (such as death) are probably more likely to be reported than minor events, even if they may be coincidental and related to other causes (14). Reports of adverse events, including death, do not necessarily mean that the reported problem was caused by a vaccine. This is especially true for VAERS reports for COVID-19 vaccines, since healthcare providers who administer COVID-19 vaccines are legally required to report to VAERS any deaths following vaccination, regardless of causality (15). (For mandatory reporting requirements, see each COVID-19 vaccine “Fact Sheet for Healthcare Providers Administering Vaccine”) (16-18). For these reasons, interpreting VAERS data without an understanding of its purpose, strengths, and limitations can lead to erroneous conclusions about cause and effect (19).
The researchers compared the death rates from the VAERS reports to all cause death rates (background mortality rates from any cause: cancer, gun shot, car crash, drowning, snake bite, etc).
Quote: our analysis of VAERS data for COVID-19 vaccines found that reporting rates for death events were much lower than expected all-cause mortality rates, and trends in reporting rates reflected known trends in background mortality rates

As the death rates from Covid-19 decline one might expect the death rates from Covid-19 by vaccination status to become more similar.
Review the data here from the WI Dept of Health Services: Covid-19 Deaths by Vaccination Status
Note the differences in the rates before, during, and towards the end of the most recent infection wave.
In TX for the week of April 9 2022, 50% of the Covid deaths were fully vaccinated.
TX Dept of State Health Services
Virginia Dept of Health also has charts of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths by vaccination status from 1 Jan 2021 till now. The deaths by status shown how between infection waves (July 2021) the rates are similar and low and the rates for the unvaccinated are higher during infection waves.

The grim milestone of this endless pandemic was just hit a few days ago. Over 1 million people have perished in the US because of it. Hopefully they will get the perfect vaccine developed that will crush this disease and will only be a once a year jab like the flu shot.

The US really is need of a perfect vaccine. Sadly their death rate is 3X that of Canada per capita.

There is no 'perfect' vaccine available anywhere. The problem with the death rate in the US, IMO, is the large number of people refusing to get vaccinated.

Very true. People have gotten vaccinated for different diseases for years. This is the only disease in history and the vaccine for it that have become a political issue.

Maybe, maybe not. History articles on the smallpox vaccination efforts suggest politics was involved but the political divide also fell along a wealth/education division.
