That's a fun website!! And makes me feel better about my granddaughter Spring Breaking in Clearwater FL - it's FAR safer (although not "safe") than northern Michigan where she lives, which appears to be under siege.

The website will plot daily cases, hospitalizations, and deaths for selected metro areas. For comparison you can plot together several metro areas, several counties, or states.

It will help our condo board decide when we can resume "normal capacities" for our amenities. While some of our residents are feeling like things are getting better now that many have been vaccinated - the covid case numbers are NOT showing that.

In this study (link to preprint provided below) the authors vaccinated nonhuman primates using the Novavax 2 dose vaccine (4 weeks apart) that is in clinical trials. The vaccine produced strong neutralizing antibodies against Wu-Hu-1 (original variant) but 9 fold lower neutralizing antibody response to 501Y.V2 (south African variant). 6 months after the initial vaccine, the primates were boosted with a vaccine developed against the RBD portion of the 501Y.V2 variant. The primates developed neutralizing antibodies against the 501Y.V2 variant in addition to the antibodies against the Wu-Hu-1 variant. In other words, the study proved a booster could be developed that would provide wider cross reactivity of vaccine induced antibodies to cover the new variants.

In this study 2 dose vaccines, Moderna (mRNA) and NovaVax (protein plus adjuvant), were tested in infant rhesus macaques (median age = 2.2 months) and the responses to these vaccines were monitored over a 22 week period. They found the vaccines induced neutralizing antibody production and Spike-specific memory CD27+ B cell production.
This is analogous to studies that were performed prior to the start of phase 3 clinical trials for Covid vaccines in adults. The authors suggest that infant vaccination may yield lifelong immunity.

Mark - aren't we all assuming there will need to be boosters, as variants continue to emerge?

As long as a high percentage of the population remains unvaccinated the hazard of a key mutation remains unacceptably high.

Deb, the current variants appear to be covered (prevent hospitalization or death) by the current vaccines. I think the vaccine manufacturers have started development and testing of boosters so that when a new variant develops that isn’t covered they have boosters ready. The idea being, make the boosters for the South African variant (one with weakest coverage by current vaccines) with the hope that the new variants can be covered by the antibodies produced by boosters to the South African variant.
