Here is a comprehensive review of sars-cov-2 transmission within schools which included PCR testing for asymptotic cases after exposure.

COVID-19 transmission in educational institutions August to December 2020, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany: a study of index cases and close contact cohorts
doi: https://doi.org/10.1101/2021.02.04.21250670
Quote:

We found that the individual risk of acquiring SARS-CoV-2 among high-risk contacts in the educational setting is 1·3%, but that this risk rises to 3·2% when the index case is a teacher and to 2·5% when the index case occurs in a day-care centre.

Neutralization of viruses with European, South African, and United States SARS-CoV-2 variant spike proteins by convalescent sera and BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine-elicited antibodies
doi: https://doi.org/10.1101/2021.02.05.430003
Quote:

We show that convalescent sera from individuals who had been infected prior to the emergence of the variants, neutralized viruses with the UK B.1.1.7, South Africa B.1.351, Columbus, Ohio COH.20G/677H, Europe 20A.EU2 and mink cluster 5 spike with titers similar to that of the earlier D614G spike protein. Sera of individuals vaccinated with the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine neutralized D614G virus with an average titer 7-fold higher than convalescent sera. The vaccine-elicited antibodies neutralized virus with the B.1.1.7 spike protein with titers similar to D614G virus, suggesting high level protection from this variant. The vaccine-elicited antibodies neutralized virus with the B.1.351 spike with an average 3-fold reduction in titer (1:500), a titer that was still higher than that elicited by natural infection for virus with the D614G spike (1:139).

So far, the variants tested have not escaped the immune responses due to previous infections or vaccination with the Pfizer vaccine. This vaccine appears to have produced a larger immune response than a natural infection.

This study estimated the percentage of total SARS-CoV-2 infections in the UK which were reported as positive PCR tests; most asymptotic cases are not tested, not all symptomatic cases are tested, and the PCR test has a significant false negative rate. The authors estimated 25% of all infections were tested and reported.

Estimating the proportion of SARS-CoV-2 ........ions reported through diagnostic testing

I would expect this percentage to be lower where the testing rates are lower. The testing rate in the UK was slightly higher than in the USA; meaning we can multiply the report cases by 4 to estimate the total cases in the USA.

How long will it take to evaluate the South African mutation?

This news was almost tear-producing from my adult kids who are visiting; and juggling their own careers (truck broker and college professor) and keeping 4 kids age 6 to 14 who are all schooling online, with each child having different times they must be present online for a face-to-face class. I truly don't know how parents are managing all of this....

Please don’t shoot the messenger

On a lighter note, my wife and I will be running a vaccination clinic this weekend. All our pregnant ewes (~60) need a booster prior to lambing.

GalaxoSmithKline and others published a preprint of on viral subunit vaccine with adjuvants (common way to make vaccines)tested in non-human primates and evaluated the protection these vaccines provided when the animals were challenged with SARS-CoV-2 including the new variant from the UK. The antibody titer levels were higher with these new vaccine formulations than with Moderna's vaccine. They plan to start clinical trials soon.

The effectiveness of antiviral treatments (from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly), serum from patients vaccinated with Pfizer's vaccine (13-15 days after 2nd dose), and serum from previously infected patients to protect against infection by three new variants: variants B.1.1.7 (UK), 31 B.1.351 (South Africa) and B.1.1.248 (Brazil). The antivirals partially or completely failed to prevent cell entry of these new variants. The serum from Pfizer vaccinated and serum from previously infected patients had reduced effect at preventing cell entry (the beginning of the infection process). These results are from inhibition experiments outside the body.

Is this directed towards me?? I hope not - you don't know how many times I've wanted to reach through this computer screen to hug you for providing us with FACTS.

Have fun with vaccinations - I suspect your "clients" aren't as enthused about that as most of us are about getting OUR shots....LOL!
