I do believe they have the wrong demographics for Roseanne. I assume they will take anyone's money.

Cloudancer I agree with the Formula Sprint concept. Going faster and faster is not the purpose. Car racing is show business. 90% of the fans can't tell if a car is doing a 12 second lap or a 16 second lap, only that one seems faster than the other. Spending mega bucks to win at local tracks serves no one. I agree, use smaller tires, no wings, and no titanium motors. The fans just want to cheer their favorites and know that everyone has a fair chance regardless of their bank account.
That ESPN article on short tracks was great. Good on Harvick and Stewart for helping. I'll even give that piece of dung Denny Hamlin a shout out for his annual short track race.
There was an attempt to get ONE short track asphalt stock car race track in Texas. Houston Motorsports Park had a group trying to revive their program. I haven't heard if they will try again this year.
Houston is a tough market. Absolutely no motorsport TV reporting except the annual big drag racing show. TV sports reporters basically just read PR releases from the ball sports. The weather doesn't help. USAC or Outlaws aren't going to tow a 1,000 miles to a rainout. It rains a lot here.
I could go on and on about USAC letting Jimmy Clark and Colin Chapman ruin champ car racing with rear engine cars.
OK. I'm done. For now.

I watched the Cup qualifying session while waiting for the NCAA Div 1 Wrestling finals to come on. Noticed that some teams deliberately either didn't make a lap in first round qualifying or took a leisurely 'Sunday Drive' around the bottom of the track. This apparently relates to the current rule that states the cars must start the race on the tires used in qualifying. Since 24 cars must make a run in the first round, everyone advances to the second round, where they then made a serious run. It was mentioned by Larry Mac and Blabbermouth in the broadcast several times. Do I smell a new rule coming?

Then there was the entire Hendrick stable shut out of qualifying because they all failed to get through the laser inspection and will start at the back with the attendant punishment doled out to their car or crew chiefs.

^^^Yeah, NASCAR shouldn't be putting up with that.
Heart breaker that Hendrick is having trouble. Let's all shed a tear.

I spent most of the first 16 years of my Navy career overseas. Very hard to follow any auto racing in the 70s and early 80s.

I was excited to be able to get to local dirt tracks after being stationed in Dallas in the late 80s. Enjoyed it so much I decided to try to make a living at local tracks when I retired -after 20 years service in 1992. Stayed with it full-time until the end of the 1997 season. Part time til the end of the 2010 season.

I found local level racing to be a sport on life support with a terminal disease. Kept alive by the love of a generation of promoters, racers and fans steadily growing older.

Extremely hard to get young folks interested in racing. They don’t have the attention span. The young racers we saw come into the sport were all sure that would be in Winston Cup in a few years. Ricky Stenhouse and Chris Beuschet did.

The competition for people’s entertainment dollar is so intense. There are so many ways to be entertained. When I got to Dallas, three local tracks were “front gate” tracks, by the time I stepped away, all were “back gate” tracks. (Front gate means most of the $15-20,000 needed to run the show comes from fans in the grandstands, back gate means the money comes from pit passes and entry fees I.e. the racers)

Changing rules hurt, but the lobbying to change the rules starts the day the current rules are released. Every single racer/ car owner has a better idea. Along with every tire supplier, parts house, engine builder, etc.

These issues and many others have their roots back in the early days of the sport. There are no easy answers. I could go on for many pages about how the technology has made the classic sport of the 50s and 60s impossible to maintain today.

I enjoy it when I can, but like my father, I’m seeing my youth disappear and my grandchildren are enjoying things I don’t really understand. They put up with going to the races occasionally with Paw Paw, but will never be fans.

This changing of the younger generation tastes and older generation seeing their beloved hobbies/ things go away is normal.

Across the Rio Grande Valley of Texas are hundreds of empty RV sites this year in campgrounds/ resorts. These resorts were designed for the generation which reached their 60s in the 1980s.

The generation reaching their 60s in the 2000s isn’t going to these resorts in numbers sufficient to replace the older folks dying or being too limited to travel any longer. The newer generation is not interested in in resort activities. They are more active, and want to travel, not sit for 5 to 6 months in the winter. Snowbird resorts are having a difficult time trying to figure out a new operating model in order to stay in business.

The same with NASCAR and auto racing in general. Everyone from short tracks to the superspeedwats are trying to figure out how to attract a generation that wants constant feedback/ information. That wants simple easy to understand rules for on-track actions. And wants the whole show from driver introductions to victory lane interview over in less than two hours.

Listening to Dave Moody the other day, he stated the average age of a NASCAR fan increases by a year, every year.
