I'd go along with that, and remove the aero. Keep the roof flaps and hood flaps for safety. See if they will drive that thing into a corner at 208MPH. I think we have to find some safe way for them to have to get out of the gas longer than they do now.

When we ran the first few Longhorn Roundups at North Texas Motor Speedway east of Dallas in the 90s, a lot of the drivers from the Midwest complained about how tacky the track was for the first heat races.

They were very happy about the hard dry slick which took rubber by time for the features each evening. Though of course it was almost impossible to keep the track moist with over 225 modifieds running each night.

Lanny Edwards had a couple ‘tillers’ he would use at intermission on the track at times to try to keep the bottom of Devil’s Bowl moist. He also used them on nights when we had a stiff wind from the north or south. That would dry out the end of the track getting the full brunt of the wind while leaving the other end moist.

Back about 1989 I was writing an article on the World of Outlaws and talking with Doug Wolfgang and Steve Kinser. They said that most promoters set the track to go dry because a moist tacky track is a horsepower track. Local/ regional drivers had almost no chance of a good finish running against WoO traveling drivers in those conditions. They simply didn’t have the motors the WoO guys had.

A dry track gives the local drivers a chance because it is a driver track, and a local with a good throttle foot, and great knowledge of how to make his chassis work has a chance on a dry track.

Dry tracks in my opinion keep the racing action closer than a tacky/ heavy track.

I guess I first saw what you are calling a tiller at the Chili Bowl several years back. It was PTO driven off a tractor and, for lack of a better description, looked like a bunch of duckbills mounted vertically and rotating. It does a pretty good job of loosening and leveling the surface. Stewart was on the tractor using it a few years ago. This year he was spending more time inspecting the track and pointing to areas that needed attention. They do a pretty good job at the Chili Bowl of keeping up with the track. Talk in the stands is Stewart may be buying the Chili Bowl since Edwards passed away. I'll give Eldora another chance but I won't go back if it's another dust bowl.
That is a good point about a wet vs. dry track regarding locals vs. travelers. But I'm not sure if there would be any locals at Eldora running USAC National midgets, sprints, and silver crown.

It wasn't necessary to have a "store-bought racing engine" to have a chance at winning. I won a number of racetrack championships, but not at Manzanita (the big fast track where the "big boys" raced. Sure, I won heat races, and second place in the main. The arrival of more and more traction, pushed the sport onto the slippery slope. I got "out money-ed" on the racetrack. AND did not want to spend another 40,000 dollars (for a hobby). I talked to several racetrack promoters, and tried and tried to get them to place some performance limitations on the racecars. They tried to tell me that was not the answer. Finally, in 1978, I announced that I was going to promote "hobby racing", with Sprint Cars, and I was going to call the class Formula Sprint. And, I was going built a new racetrack just for the purpose. Basically, a maximum of 12" wide wheel on the right rear and maximum tire tread width of 12" on the right rear AND NO WINGS. I did it in EL Paso Texas, named it El Paso Speedway Park. The concept worked GREAT, for a few years. I made quite a bit of money. THEN, some of the car owners told me it was time to go to big tires and wings. I said, not on my watch! What you guys need to do is rent the facility, and show everone how it's done. AND, they did. They tried it. One tenant after another. Then, 3 of my ole racing friends (who had money) decided to do everyone a favor, and bought me out (50+ acres and all). They're the ones putting in a new racetrack in Vado NM, and now El Paso is without a racetrack. The new track will be on leased land from the state, with water supplied by the state. As soon as they can "clear the path" towards drilling a well. These guys know how to promote big shows, and not worry too much about making money. They have money from other sources,....kinda like NASCAR.

Harvick escaped 'Judge NASCAR' this week. It was Chase Elliot's team that got busted this time around for some rear suspension funny business. Points docked, crew chief fined, car chief suspended 2 races. But my, the 4 team is rolling, the entire Stewart Haas stable looking pretty good.
