But as Flat Broke posted, we now learn both Hamlin's wins at Darlington are tainted and the same offense. For the uninitiated, what does messing with the rear truck arm or trailing arm shims gain (or whatever doohickie or thingamabob it is)? Change in rear axle or wheel geometry that allows a driver to carry more speed through the turn??? Inquiring minds........ |

This is something I know a lot about. It's call roll steer. It involves modifying the rear suspension components in such a way as to cause the LR tire to move forward and the RR tire to move aft when the car naturally rolls a little bit in the turn. It allows the driver to hit the throttle earlier in the turn due to the rear axle skewing, or "steering". I experimented with this quite a bit, in a dirt Sprint Car, back in the 70's. It was such a significant advantage that it helped me win 3 track championships. The competition never figured out what, nor how, I was doing it. * This post was edited 09/07/17 07:04am by an administrator/moderator * Willie & Betty Sue Miko & Sparky 2003 41 ft Dutch Star Diesel Pusher/Spartan Floorplan 4010 Blazer toad & Ranger bassboat |

Does 'a little bit' really equal that huge a performance advantage in a 3400 pound car at the speeds they run. I could see an advantage for a dirt sprint car. Nice job by the way, Cloud. Back to encumbered win. Lots of fans I'm hearing want the encumbered be a disqualification. Everyone else moves up one spot. Seems fair to me. You guys? On edit: personally I think that NASCAR should give in a little more in adjustments of the parts giving to them. What the heck is wrong with a better handling car? * This post was edited 09/07/17 07:24am by FlatBroke * Hitch Hiker "08" 29.5 FKTG LS ![]() |

I could go for it, but NASCAR won't. Maybe they should start. The rule massagers pay a price whether they win, place, or show, but maybe loss of the purse, trophy and win on their record would hurt more? Then again, if it weren't for 'creativity'........... |

Re: Disqualification - Big Bill France set the policy way back in the starting days of NASCAR. He felt it vital that any disqualification happened at the track before the fans and racers departed. That is likely the oldest unchanged rule in NASCAR. I doubt they will change it. I have been in favor of taking wins away for a long time. Points penalties and fines had the practical impact of a disqualification before NASCAR implemented the "win and in the chase" policy. I suspect the rule will be tweaked for next year it knock a driver with wins out of automatic chase qualification if an encumbered win occurs after qualifying for the chase. Tolerances - NASCAR allows ample tolerances for all measurements. If a specification is 0.500 inches with a tolerance of 0.005 inches - the teams will build/ adjust their cars for 0.504 inches. No matter where the maximum tolerance is set, the teams will push right up to the limit. At some point a rule maker has to say X is too much. And some car will come in with a measurement of 1/10,000 past the maximum allowable measurement (or whatever is the minimum measurement possible). A bit of Chad Knaus in you?? ![]() ![]() I had a head start in innovation-ing. In the early 60's, while in engineering school, I was very much involved with IKF Enduro Go-Kart racing. I had full access to a small dyno room, and a large fully equipped machine shop. I experienced success in chassis and in engines. I developed 6 cubic inch version of a Mac engine that delivered 24.8 HP. I developed the first adjustable oil clutch. I also built one of the first-design hydraulic all wheel brakes. I won the nationals at the ole Riverside road racing track, and another nationals at the Hilltop Raceway in Shreveport LA, and the nationals in Mexico. I ended up getting inducted into the IKF Hall of Fame. If I had been 6 ft tall and charming, I could've been a contender for the big show.... ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Cloud, that is why you are THE MAN in this thread. Cool stuff, thanks for sharing. On another note Subway has shamed themselves out of sponsoring Suarez this weekend because they saw a vid of him passing out doughnuts from a competitor. It was to be the last race in a 4 race deal.
