Topic: Nascar Follies

Posted By: thomasmnile on 07/25/17 09:00am

FWIW, from Bob Pockrass on ESPN.COM yesterday:

"O'Donnell said NASCAR is considering eliminating the overtime line and going to back to the previous rule of one full lap to the start-finish line being the mark to get to for 2018. And it would still have unlimited attempts to accomplish that."

Must be more than a little frustration from somewhere/somebodies over the rule...

I agree there is frustration.

There will always be frustration because anything NASCAR tries isn't going to work all the time.

It doesn't matter if the mark is an arbitraty line on the back straight, or the start finish line.

There will always be wrecks on the track before the leaders get exactly to the 'line' and criticism that a caution was thrown too quickly, or thrown too late.

And I don't care what NASCAR wants to call it - these overtime races almost always end under the caution flag.

The start/finish line or overtime line was just an artificial invention to pretend the leaders were able to race to the checkered flag.

Think NASCAR might be realizing the overtime line thing really isn't necessary. The start/finish line rule was good. I even thought the 3 attempts rather than unlimited attempts to complete a race with the checkered flag was reasonable.

It does NOT matter how they massage this rule. The fact is, THEY are stuck with a few racetracks with which there's no chance to satisfy us. We want to see a good RACING show, and changing the way they end the race is not going to do it. WE ARE the show! We keep watching what's supposed to be a race, and we complain every week. You think we're going to see a good race at POCONO. All I see is poco NO.....[emoticon]

Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s NBC broadcast role could extend to NFL, Olympics
It looks like Jr will keep busy on TV.

He's a football nut and big Redskins fan. Maybe they'll work him into a sideline reporter gig on Sunday Night Football.

I think Dale Jr does a good job with facial expressions and tone of voice in his TV commercials. Someone who can convey emotion when desired has a future on television.

"Liquid" rules allowed the 18 a chance to get a championship with only running half the races. [emoticon]

And, they might have to "liquid-rule" the rules again to give him another chance to do the "impossible"....[emoticon]

The 18 drove his butt off winning that championship. Nobody can take that away from him.
It was like Dale Sr coming from last TWICE at Bristol many years ago to win, only Kyle did it for "half" a season.
I like the way Amy was worked into that ad with the mayo tag. She evidently is in charge now anyway. [emoticon]
