When it is a 'Chevy' problem - that means the Chevy teams have gone with something lighter and less robust than the Ford/ Toyota teams.

Mike Joy said more than once - the way to run Pocono is to run it like a road course with only left turns. When a team tries to run Pocono like an oval they have problems.

Sometimes it is a parts supplier issue. Remember Ryan Blaney had broken axles both of the previous two races (Charlotte and Dover) along with a similar issue on another Ford team.

That axle is a part supplied by a manufacturer, and a part they have been using for a long time. This week, they went back to an older, heavier, thicker rear axle - and it didn't break.

People like to thing race cars are built tough. They aren't. The engines are built to 600-700 miles. The brakes and drive train parts are as light and fragile as possible, yet hopefully able to last an entire race.

Junior's interview was sad. But after Jimmy's wreck - who is to say Junior wasn't right that something didn't feel right/ safe about the car.

Paw n' Gram. Entirely possible regarding Junior, but his current season is very reminiscent of Stewart's last two before he pulled the plug. The passion seems gone...

Yes, the passion is gone.

A person can only take so much disappointment, and the concussion last year(?) certainly took a lot out of Junior. I don't think he is willing to risk another potential injury.

I often say what separates those drivers from the rest of us is that they know that a big wreck will happen and they can only trust the safety gear to protect them.

Sometimes they decide it isn't worth the risk anymore.

I thought when it was announced as Junior's last year it was a bad idea. No one has yet done a quality competitive last tour in NASCAR. They should just retire.

But, the good news is JJ & Lowe's just re-upped with Hendrick for another 3 years! Not much talked about, but isn't this particular driver/crew chief/sponsor combo one of the longest running in NASCAR, in any era? For that matter, Am I wrong the 48 is the ONLY team with a primary sponsor that's on the hood for the entire season, even the non-points and exhibition races?

I think ole Jeff Gordon had a decent last lap tour.

Obviously, Jeff Gordon did a lot of training for his new job. And, sitting on a high chair makes him appear like a taller guy. All good.

I gotta say that for being a NASCAR show, the Michigan race had a good level of excitement. IMO much credit should go to the 3 stage format. Congratulations to Chip Ganasi and Kyle Larson and the crew.

Johnson's contract is 3 years but Lowes is only for next season. Not that they're leaving, just that it's only 1 year.

Maybe they will put 19-year-old William Byron in the 88 car and Lowes will sponsor it in 2019.

Danica was going to pass about 15 cars until she got punted. Has anyone ever hit the inside wall as much?
The young guns are really running well, they are a pleasure to watch.

IMO Danica's primary problem comes from not having any short-track racing experience. I know from experience that if you do a lot of Sprint Car dirt track racing, you will learn the tricks of avoiding wrecks (even before they happen). Good peripheral vision plus the ability to properly "profile" the players and the action in front of you, are things that you need in order to avoid crashes that are about to happen. Danica seems to lack these qualities. For sure she's not good at avoiding crashes. But, I'm still a fan. And, I wish her well.
