Anyone with a F-450 care to comment about the daily drive ability of the F-450? I'm sure my experience with a 2003 is nothing like what I'd get from a 2017, but my F-450 (chassis cab) has 4.88 gearing and the fuel mileage is appalling. The engine turns over at 2500 RPM at highway speeds. When I'm unloaded, I can run over a dime with the 19.5s and tell you what year it was minted by how hard my kidneys bounce. However, when I have 3,000 pounds of pin weight on the hitch, it rides as smooth as a Cadillac.

My F450 unloaded rides better than my F350 SRW ever did. Also, it turns way tighter. The F450 Crewcab DRW can't park where the F350 Supercab did. The 4.30 is going to cost you in lost mpg. When I was researching, it seems the 4.30 can actually gain compared to a 3.73 with a heavy load or in mountains. Of course, you'd have to compare to identical vehicles over the same conditions to know if the comparison is fair or not.

You can always try http://forums.woodalls.com/ instead. I'm seeing mostly 1500 crash videos. That's a different vehicle entirely.
BTW, only the F150 in this one got a top safety pick. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_V5WGkRZQOU. But, it was from 2015. The RAM 1500 performed poorly.
Seems quite a bit different with the 2500. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLcf_8A-fO4

I had for Ram Trucks for being listed as one of the most unsafe vehicles tested.
I can't seem to find that test. Got a link?

They ran the F450 against the Ram 3500 because Ram doesn't make a 4500 pickup that isn't commercial.

When I bought my Ram in middle of 15, there was a couple guys pulling a trailer up some mountain in Colorado. I was confused that they put the ram 3500 dually up against the Ford 450. And the ford came with 4:60 rear end or something. the ford won by a couple seconds and they seemed proud. no idea why they didn't run the F350.
I bought the Dodge anyway since I this is my 6th Dodge, and 4th Cummins. I did skip the years of 2007.5 until they started using DEF.

There is no F450 surcharge for my insurance. My F450 was registered as "commercial" previously, but they were a horse breeder. I changed it since I wasn't commercially using it. BTW, it has a 14500 GVWR.

Many insurance companies don't even mind that if you install a fifth wheel hitch or pickup bed, but they rate the liability highest with a flat bed style deck.
The F450 pickup only comes in upper trims with many options included as standard. You can buy a Class 4 or 5 chassis cab for less than this pickup. Comparing it to a 3500 from Ram or GM is not really fair - With its 19.5 wheels and larger Dana axles, it has a distinct advantage over the other pickups.
BINGO!! Even though that F450 listed has a "labeled " payload of 4914, that number is the max (by insurance and licensing limits) of actual weight minus GVWR, not the actual component limits minus actual weight. I contend the true payload of that F450 is closer to 7500 vs the labeled payload of 4914. More true payload for my money than the F350 even though the labeled payload of the F350 is higher. Better for hauling a big TC.
