I just tell them over the last 90,000 miles of so I have averaged ~8.5 mpg. It is what it is and who should care what I get but me. Fuel is one of the cheaper item when looking at the total cost of ownership. Can not afford fuel time to sell.

I usually tell them 8-10 depending on terrain and weather conditions. I don't mind anyone asking. I just enjoy talking to people.

Lately especially with this rig, I get that when I fill up here just before heading out....I tell them this.....I am going to be dead a mighty long time, so I might as well enjoy myself...also they look at me as if I have a hole in my head. So when they ask how many MPG, I tell them it gets whatever it wants.

I describe my latest vacation. 15 days, 3600 miles, 13 states. Visited the Michigan UP, travel thru Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia. Saw the Great Plains, Kansas City, St Louis, Louisville. Camped on Lake Michigan, Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. Food costs were no more than I would have spent if we stayed home. Slept in a bed only we have ever used. No lines, TSA questioning, reservation screw ups, lost luggage, bed bugs and had views like this out the door of the coach -

Fuel and camp grounds cost me just under $2000.
Where, how long and how much was your last vacation compared to mine?

(stole that from somebody as I thought it was a funny answer). They usually laugh.

Me too! (though we average 8.2 over 8 years with our "small" DP and 5.9L Cummins)

If it's a save the earth type I explain to them that throughout history problems are mostly solved only when they reach crisis status. Therefore, the switch to alternative fuels will happen when we begin to run out of fossil fuels. I then tell them I am doing my part to make that change happen as fast a possible.
