I tell them my RV gets about 7 mpg and my truck has been averaging 5000 mpg so far this summer! That's when hooked to the RV of course. It gets worse when running around at every destination without the RV.

Hell, I don't even know what I get; my bus lacks a MPG readout and I'd just as soon not know the details though I have a pretty fair idea. I'd tell people 6-8 MPG but no one has asked.

WARNING: This post is about fuel mileage and how to talk to strangers about it. Many folks get very, very angry when you mention fuel mileage on this forum. They feel as if you should never ever talk about fuel and RVs in the same conversation and anyone who does is committing a grave offense. If you are one of those people, please stop reading now and skip this post.

OK, back to my question. I get asked on a fairly frequent basis what kind of fuel mileage I get on my rig and I've never really had a good answer for that.

Technically, over the last 21,468 miles, I've averaged 5.97 MPG; but that really doesn't tell the story and feels misleading to me. Most folks want to compare fuel economy of their current daily driver to the fuel economy of a motorhome and the comparison makes no sense at all. We don't use these vehicles in the same way.

What does the question really mean anyway? Do they want to know what it would be if we were both driving next to each other side-by-side in a similar fashion? Or do they want to know how much fuel I consume over a period of time. Here's the real answer, "It all depends."

My mileage can range from 2.2 MPG driving up a mountain to 38 MPG coasting down a long slope. But it gets even more complicated than that. I use diesel fuel to power my generator, heat my water and even to pull my toad. Where does that factor in? Here's what I've estimated:

At a low altitude (denser air)
On a cool day (denser air)
On a flat highway
With no wind
Not towing a truck, running the generator or heating water
Driving at around 60 MPH
With my tires properly inflated and all maintenance performed

I'll get around 9 MPG. That's the better answer, but it takes a while to explain that, and I don't always know what the other person is looking for when they ask me the question. How do you handle it?

that's far too complex. i've been on this forum for quite some time amd have never detected any anger when mpg is the topic. most people who ask me about my mpg are simply curious as to how "bad" it is. i tell them truthfully and most don't enquire further. to the few that do i go into a bit more detail as to how i use less fuel overall on a single vacation than many (most?) do during their commute to/fm work.

When I had the Class A, I would usually say,..around 8 m.p.g. If I wanted to add to the conversation, might say...uphill, downhill, tailwind, headwind. Would usually get a reply of "just wondered."

Simple, you'll get +/- 8 mpg, typically more on the minus side. There's some exceptions, but that is very much in the ballpark.

If they don't have an RV, like at a gas station, I just say "I get pretty good mileage for a two bathroom house." If they are RVers and want an honest answer, my gas rigs got about 6-7mpg, a lot less going over the mountains. The diesel so far gets about 8mpg.

Interesting timing for this question. Historically, when my coach was gas powered I got 7-7.5 and would tell those at the gas station something to the effect of "Well, I don't commute with it so it doesn't much matter what it gets, but it gets 7-7.5 mpg".

Since I made the engine conversion to the Duramax, the question has come from my fellow FMC coach owners. The documented cumulative fuel mileage to date, with 14,585 miles on the conversion, is 14.23 mpg. This includes a trip from the west coast to the east coast and back. For the last five tank fulls, which is when I switched the Banks tuner to the "economy" mode, it has averaged 15.03 mpg. Those fillups got me from the east side of Michigan to Brooks, Oregon which is just south of Portland.

While those mileage figures are good, it will take a lot of miles to recover the cost of the conversion. I need more miles on the economy setting to get a solid "average" number.
