Yep, when the front went through, we almost got blown away. Have never seen a dust storm like we had today, since we got back this fall. It has calmed down a bit, but still very gusty. Supposed to be windy through tomorrow afternoon then back to what has been a very calm winter, at least that is what the TV station says...... One saving grace was no rain here, to mix with this wind and dust...

I guess I'm missing the part where someone actually explains what it is your guarding when gate guarding. Is it your responsibility to know who goes in and out? or just to insure equipment isn't taken?

Our job is to control access into the work zone and you work as a sub contractor for a security company, to either the oil company or the ranch. A few jobs are 8-5 M-F rework jobs, with you living in your RV at the job site and then the rest are 7 days a week with a few being 24/7, where one of you is required to be awake and on duty at all times. No, we are NOT responsible for the actual equipment, just to call the proper authorities if there is a problem on site.

Virgin Mobile...well, I guess we need a WiFi signal first...Duh..![doh [emoticon]](http://www.coastresorts.com/sharedcontent/cfb/images/doh.gif)
Since we have none that does not work. Why the Air Card does and what frequency it is on is my mystery. In the mornings like now I have reception on it and maybe at night. I know the skip of the signal but there seems NO WAY to boost that reception.
So until I get a WiFi signal looks like the Air Card of AT%T is the best we will do until we go to town and use the local cafe/bar WiFi in BIG WELLS. Could be worse...have to go get the mail anyway so just take the computer with me if the signal was lost before I got done in the morning.
So if anyone else has any ideas let me know. I have looked into Hughes Net but they want a permanent pole and then $150 or more service call IF I move. So have ruled that out for now.

That is true IF you use Hughes Net as the provider, but NOT true if you use a VAR like Motosat as your provider. Many of us have either a permanent mount on the roof or a tripod system that you take down and put up each time you move. PM me if you want more info.

Someone is getting cell service around there. That's what you need to find out. Ask the company man-I KNOW they are communicating. Our Mi Fi works off of the Sprint Network (Virgin)and piggybacks off of the cellular signal. We have had iffy contact way out here, but never none. Now we have a company provided booster and always have signal. Video and such are out, but at least we can communicate. BTW, I am deducting all expenses when it comes to communication-I believe its a necessity for a gate guard.

Betsy and I want to give Debbie, of rudyanddebbie a great big thanks for relieving us for a couple of hours today, so we could get out and have a meal together. Teacher's Pet and Scotty's Mom stopped by for a visit and Debbie's earlier offer was very much appreciated.....Thanks Debbie.

Just wanted to say Hello; spouse and I have worked for GGS about half of 2011 from March thru November at sites near many of you (two near Crystal City, Gonzales, Cuero, Moulton and a road on no map below Valley Wells (10 miles of bullet rock road to Cotulla). Our experience has been that in the Summer, the generator cannot support our formerly pristine class a on 50amp service when it's 110 degrees in the shade. AT&t wireless internet and phone service has the best coverage in South Texas. Have not had any problems with ranch rules or various companies as yet but most all GG's have a firearm in their RV. We can quibble all day but as a Tx resident I have my CHL for off site travel and do keep them in the M/H. Combining my gathered horror stories and experience I will probably ask in advance before accepting my next assignment with anyone. It is not if but when you may need it; you can draw a line east-west under Cotulla, Texas and roll the dice nightly. There are incidents where armed cartels have actually CAMPED on ranches and the BP and police WARN hunters not to go back there! You will not read this in the papers. Secondly, the closer to the border you are, the more likely the illegals will be attempting at the least to kidnap you OR steal your vehicle before proceeding up U.S. 183, highway 16, etc. Think Freer, Encinal, and especially Catarina. Just have to be vigilant and ensure your lights stay on brightly all night; Chesapeake Oil is contracting for light bars at most sites now versus the little dual lanterns most services provide. All in all, not a bad deal; don't think the Dept of Labor lawsuits will be settled for years probably.
