Fellow Avionistas, rather than searching the forum - quite a task these days - I wonder if anyone can give me info or direct me to posts that detail cleaning the outer skin and getting it as uniformly shiny as possible. I do not wish to polish the camper, only to make it as bright as the 60 year old anodized aluminum can be. Thanks in advance.
Incidentally, there has been discussion about painting the outer skin. I have now been told by a very experienced boat painter that with all the seams and rivets, the paint may be expected to pull apart and look less than wonderful in a fairly short time.
My next step will be to take Argo, the all-aluminum camper, to a vinyl wrap shop and have a conversation with them about the wrap approach. I will report back when I know more.
I will soon mount the camper on the truck permanently. You may expect pictures at that time.
Onward!
Dick

I did some searching but wasn't able to find much on cleaning the original skins. This was one thread I found that contained some info. Most of what I came across was from when Avion C-11 went through the process of stripping and polishing his C-11. Maybe someone else has better recommendations?

Here is a thread on Airforums

Interesting he thought the Avion was too heavy for the Sprinter, as they have large Lance Truck Campers on Sprinters here. IVECO with it's 7tonne GVWR and 23,000lb GCVWR has no problems. How much does the Avion weigh? Your Pickup I thought would have less carrying capacity than the Sprinter?

Robert I actually don't know all of the Sprinter models. We drove the Tonke on a diesel Sprinter in Europe, and felt it was somewhat underpowered. At any rate, that was the explanation that I was given about the Avion + Sprinter.

D1Trout, I think that a vinyl wrap is worth looking into. I keep fantasizing about the "Razzle Dazzle" camouflage on ships during WWl as a model that I'd like to replicate.

We've had this discussion before. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

I have had decent results using and aluminum cleaner that my pressure washer supplier carries . It contains phosphoric acid and degreasers . I spray it on with a spray bottle , let it set for a few minutes keeping it moist and brush it with a scrub brush . Then rinse thoroughly . It doesn't seem to hurt the anodizing or plexiglass windows . It doesn't make it look new but brightens it some and looks more uniform . Spray Nine is also a good cleaner .

The real kicker with the Sprinter is the low tow rating, which I think is 5000#

As i mentioned i found a 1968 c11.
Now it is "stored" in the driveway of a friends yard in virginia.
I have to get it over to europe to see it in real.
I allready bought a palomino w.sl. about 12 years ago shipped it over and did some modificatins on it.
I want to keep as close original as it is right now.
New toiletbowl, new ranks etc.
I have to change some things which have to do with gas, because your system is not allowed in germany.
I think of using the gas storrage for the batteries, change the waterheater into a waterheater/furnace combo.
At the moment i have no idea where to store the gas bottles.
What did yu guys do with them?
Another question i have is the toilet bowl.
I did the first 100 pages of you tons of information. I am quite impressed.
What did you do to replace the bowl. I don't want to "downsize" into a porta potti thing.
I have to add a grey water tank and i thin i hqve to replace the b.w. tank.
The original fresh water tank, is there a posibility of a spare part which is close to the original? (To fit where it belongs to?)
What fridge is in there? At the moment there is no fridge in there.
And i fund out there is no key with it. D the locks have numbers to order a set of keys or is it easyer to replace the lock? What type is in there?
I think i will have more questions when i see my baby in real.
But i hope i can order these two things, that they can be shipped in the avion overseas.
Thanks so far.

Now a Avion 1968 c11 Needs to be restored

Joerg, you've taken on a challenge that is beyond what most of us have experienced. You not only want to restore an Avion, but ship it to Europe. I believe you can do it all. I'll try to answer some of your questions, but the Forum crowd will have to help.

"At the moment i have no idea where to store the gas bottles."

Here is an image from the original storage on the rear drivers side of the coach. Is this the sort of information that you need? If so, I'll try to find other answers for you and send along pictures.

Thanks
I have seen this picture somewhere in the first 100 pages.
But the c11 doesn't have this compartment.
"My" bottles are on the right front.
At the moment i'm traveling for a few weeks in newzealand.
When i get home i try to pst some pictures from the c11.
What is the meaning of "virginia unit".
@67
I shipped my second campr over in 02.
Bought it in helena montana.
Than i bought a chevy suburban in n.y.
And my k3500 duramax in ok.
So its not a mystery for me.
At the moment i'm thinking of buying a truck to move it or let the shipping company do it.

Thanks silvrpompadour
I will check it when i have a bettr conection to the internet.
At the moment its too slow and expensive here in newzealand.
First of all i have to bring it over to europe.
If someone has an old pickuptruck (located in/around virginia) for sale, feel free to offer. I will need it for the roro shipping.

Brand new to the forum and I wanted to thank you all for this great thread full of useful info! I just bought a 1965 C-10 that is in decent condition but needs some work.

The previous owner disassembled a lot of the interior and began painting the walls. Luckily most of the parts are still here and it all appears to be in fairly good shape. He also stripped most of the anodizing and started to polish the aluminum. It looks like I'll be giving it a full polish job!

It fits great in my '77 F250, ignore the ratchet straps, they are there temporarily to hold it in place. I ordered the correct turnbuckles and will be making removable frame mounts.

Welcome 65Avion! That's a sweet setup, I love my Cummins but think these campers look much better on a 'classic' truck like yours.
By the look of things, I'd say the previous owner had a TON of elbow grease into the strip/polish task and wasn't too far from a final polish.
Thats gonna be a lot of silver going down the road.
