Topic: Avion truck campers - Hundreds of photos

Posted By: SilverPompadour on 07/12/16 05:01pm

Welcome to the new members.
Joerg to add pictures, the pictures must first be uploaded to a file hosting service such as Photobucket. On the forum reply page, there is a button above the text entry box with a mountain and sun(just right of the envelope). This will open a dialog box into which the web address of the picture can be entered. 640x480 is the preferred picture size. The picture will display inline with the text of your reply.

Southedistoman when I picked up my rig, I used two 2" nylon ratchet straps. One went up and over the roof, the other around the back as the door would not even stay closed. Just dont overtighten them.
Is that a big block V6 in that 72? We're gonna need some pictures from you also.

Ticki2,
Thanks for the measurements, I spent some time today with a tape measure. I've got a 6x12 dual axle trailer that measures 94.5" outside the fenders. I could take the Sawsall to the fenders and it would be right in the neighbourhood of 90" outside the tires. That's the closest thing I've got, other than a 5x8 utility trailer, but I'm just not sure it's up to the task. I can't remember what it was rated for, but I was thinking not 2500+lbs.
I'll have to check on the uhaul, that may work, if the tongue weight issue could be worked out. I was worried about the cabover getting into the back of the truck with a setup like that.
My dad has a long bed half ton, I haven't give that much thought. Is that a no go? It's got a gross rear axle weight of 3890lbs. (not sure of the empty weight, don't know if it's ever truly empty to weight it.) He replaced the stock tires with load range E, because being a farm truck it is overloaded much of the time anyway.
Oh and by the way, you are correct about the '72. My fingers got ahead of my mind this morning. Tires are 9.00-16. Stock was 7.50-16 but the utility company grandad worked for swapped them out to the 9.00's on one piece rims when new and it's been that way ever since. (Learned that today)
Silverpompadour, the '72 has a big inline six, a 292. Tough old motor, but it eats manifold gaskets. I'll have to get some pictures posted up of it. Thanks guys.

What size bed does GarryK have? Looks like the ballpark of 6.5' in the signature. Southedistoman, your Dodge might do just fine.

I think you will be just fine with your truck. Maybe it would be best to take regional roads at relatively low speed. I don't even want to talk about some of the loads I've carried in various trucks....sometimes with the lights not working properly....whatever. We always made it home with a smile on our face.
However, at the First Worldwide Avionista Gathering we hope it's really well put together with tie downs, Etc, But, we won't turn you away if you come in with tow straps over the coach. Be sure and bring adult beverages ;-)

You are right that my F350 is a 6.75' bed. With the tailgate down there is 8' of flat space. Fortunately my C10 already had the floor rebuilt and reinforced with 2x4 framework. So my tailgate desnt really see any load. InfAct I have hauled the Avion with the tailgate on and off and there is no difference in the camper not on the road. But if you have the stock floor, I would not necessarily trust the 8' floor on a short bed with out additional support. You could haul it on a short bed provided you add some support from the bed over the tailgate like several 4x4's etc.
good luck!
Garry

Well, bad news, the c11 I was looking at in North Carolina fell through. I was the second guy on the list and the first one bought it. There is another on craigslist right now in Dubuque, IA. I have contacted the lady selling it and asked for more details, pictures, etc. Is it just me or does the cabover seem long on this one? Could be just an optical illusion coming from the angle the picture was taken.
Dubuque is a long way from SC but I might make the drive if it is larger. Also, if it is truly a 1972 wouldn't that make it a Cayo rather than Avion? Of course if it is a '72 it would be the same year as my granddads truck, which would be cool. Thanks, Scott

I'm not sure if its still there, but Chuck Cayo had the original Avion test vehicle for sale in Michigan. As I recall, it was used by Ford to determine the abilities of its trucks to carry campers.

It might be best to check with Chuck. He certainly knows Avion/Cayo, and he had a few for sale last Fall. cncayo AT comcast dot net

67Avion, thanks for the tip. I sent Mr Cayo a message tonight.
I talked to the owner in Dubuque, and that camper is too far away and needs too much to justify making that ride. Thanks, Scott

Joerg, welcome aboard. You're officially invited to the First Worldwide Avionista Gathering in Florida this coming Halloween. We plan to have at least two Avions there ;-).

On another note, I was in touch with Maarten van Soest at Tonke Campers in Holland. He was also interested in importing Avions into Europe. He decided that the Avion was too heavy for the Mercedes Sprinter and decided against the idea. However, he too was inspired by the look of the Airstream and the similarity to the Avion truck camper.

Last year my wife and I were in Kansas where we ran across a fellow that rebuilds mostly Airstreams. But he also had Avion TT's and Avion truck campers. He was selling all of the above to a group of Australians who were importing them to their country
I am aware that EU regs can be quite difficult to follow in regards the use of gas, propane and other issues. The heater in the Tonke that I traveled in Europe last year was a Truma, which is German made I think. Most of the appliances were Dometic.

Finally, I have seen at least one Avion C-10 at a German Airstream rally several years ago. I remember, because I styled my back up light after their mod.

Members of this Forum can also spot good Avion TCs. I saw one last week in Texas that was totally original. Someone here posted it.

Best of luck and read as much of the string as you can handle. its very long. Here is a shorter article about our rebuild click

Interesting he thought the Avion was too heavy for the Sprinter, as they have large Lance Truck Campers on Sprinters here. IVECO with it's 7tonne GVWR and 23,000lb GCVWR has no problems. How much does the Avion weigh? Your Pickup I thought would have less carrying capacity than the Sprinter?

Fellow Avionistas, rather than searching the forum - quite a task these days - I wonder if anyone can give me info or direct me to posts that detail cleaning the outer skin and getting it as uniformly shiny as possible. I do not wish to polish the camper, only to make it as bright as the 60 year old anodized aluminum can be. Thanks in advance.
Incidentally, there has been discussion about painting the outer skin. I have now been told by a very experienced boat painter that with all the seams and rivets, the paint may be expected to pull apart and look less than wonderful in a fairly short time.
My next step will be to take Argo, the all-aluminum camper, to a vinyl wrap shop and have a conversation with them about the wrap approach. I will report back when I know more.
I will soon mount the camper on the truck permanently. You may expect pictures at that time.
Onward!
Dick
