Topic: Avion truck campers - Hundreds of photos

Posted By: 67avion on 07/14/13 04:03pm

I researched the typeface on the Avion and came up with "Aviano Serif". It looks right, but I don't have independent confirmation. In looking at the original Avion material, it looks like they took some liberties with the font....

I downloaded the type from a website and incorporated it into my Photoshop application. The color is an approximation. There was a full discussion by 69Avion some time ago when he was rebuilding his Avion badge. I recalled it as awfully close to Chevie engine orange...but there are some nuances here that others may be concerned with. At any rate, here is the typeface that I found:

Looks nice. The only thing I see is a wrong apostrophey. That's an opening, you want a closing. Imagine it rotated 180 degrees. It's often done wrong so if you're matching some old logo then what you have might be better.

Does anyone know what type of plywood to buy to somewhat match the original? I need to build some doors and drawers to semi-match the original. I will need to re-glue, sand and stain my uppers, and I'ld like to finish out the rest half way close to the few bits of original....

Thanks in advance!

Garry

Hi Gary !
If your asking abt. the species, it' maple.
Not sure what you have in your area but Home Depot carries a nice 3/4 maple ply, not sure abt. 1/2".
We used to buy a couple of skids from them whenever they had overage and always found the quality very good.

Dennis , is Maple the wood or the finish ? The original '66 & '68 brochures I have state that the cabinets are Birch . The cabinets in mine are Birch , I wonder if they switched in '69 .

My cabinets are Birch as well. You can see that I had to take wood from some areas to replace damaged doors, etc. I rebuilt cabinet doors in Birch and painted them the aqua green that was used on the fronts of the interior wings.

Your both right.
So what I read they were talking abt. the finish.
The Avion '69 brochure I have states birch cabinets with two different finishes available.
Can't imagine how I missed that.

How is the wall to the bath attached to the wall and ceiling? I see the line on the painted aluminum telling me where it used to be, and I see som screw holes, but I am having a tough time picturing the assembly that mounts there.....

The plastic surround to the bath is attached by screws that are, I think, unique to the aluminum RVs. Its a small slot screw that is called a "clutch head". It is an old system of high torque fasteners. Some of my workmen call them "butterfly" screws. They are available at vintage Trailer Supply.

Those screws are used everywhere there aren't rivets on the Avion and Airstream. So, I assume you're talking about removing the screws that go around the floor as well as the back of the toilet support?

I'm not sure, but I think it all comes out. As soon as I can get the time I plan on doing just that. If you go before me, take photos and let me know.

I had a hard time locating that small size for the bath trim . When I finally did it still didn't work that well so I ground down a small flat screw driver which did the job . I replaced them with ss philip head.

I realize that I'm two years late on this re-do, but I found clutch-head/butterfly bits at our local Ace Hardware Store. And, yes, they are a pain. I replaced them with #8 Tech-screws.

See y'all on the roads, or in the parks.

Today I had the Avion, loaded with water, etc, and the F350 weighed at a CAT scale. They took my front axle, rear axle and total weight (with me aboard).

So, here are the results: CAT Scales

Steer axle 4660 lbs
Drive axle 5520 lbs.
Gross weight 10180 lbs.

The Ford description says that the truck has:
5200 Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) on the front axle.
The GAWR on the rear axle is 6830.

So it can handle 12,030 lbs of Gross weight, if I understand these things. And it looks like I'm well within bounds.

I think, if I recall correctly, that my F350 diesel weighs around 8200 pounds with me on board. If my numbers are correct, then the camper weighs around 1980 pounds (10180 loaded minus 8100 unloaded).

However, even with what appears to be plenty of room in terms of weight, the truck sits low in the rear (to my eye) and there is a little bit of a rolling feeling from side to side when its underway. Braking is terrific so far, as is acceleration.

Anyone else have any wisdom about this? It looks like the Avion TC is one of the lightest for its size. No?

Today was an off day for me so I tore into the balance of the interior which was the bathroom. If I ever meet the designer of the tiny clutch head screws it could get ugly ! But I was able to manage by grinding down some flat head screwdrivers I was determined to salvage the aluminum trim. All the walls are out along with the shower base and toilet and surround. Now onto the dirty work, floor and wing wood replacement can't wait.
