Gracious! Didn't realize how long it's been since I posted last. Been right lively of late. So, the PowerPoint briefing version:
Been hot, hot, hot. Raining at the moment, finally, and temps are reasonable. Humidity is killing sinuses, though.
Went to university band alumni gathering. Had a wonderful time.
Came home, picked up cats, found out they'd given wrong meds to each cat. Spotacus needed additional vet care as a result. Alex came through just fine. Won't be using that vet clinic's boarding facility again. Just wish our own vet hadn't stopped boarding: cats were completely safe and happy there.
WLToo added a deer feeder in the meadow. Leoghaire figured out how to bump the bottom to get more food outside the scheduled feeding times. Funny to watch. She's one scary smart doe.
Measured out area for a butterfly/hummingbird garden. Now we need the "keep the deer out" fence and a bunch of dirt before getting anything planted. Gonna be a long project.
Had some bad pains, GP thought it might be pancreatitis. Blood tests came back normal. Getting scheduled with GI doc to see what it might have been. Big mystery, but not hurting now.
WLToo harvested very nice cantaloupes, although quite small. I suggested more fertilizer to get the fruit bigger. He's building more garden plots now, so we can start the winter garden.
Spotacus moved into the deer feeder box, and has kept it far longer than any other box. Not even interested in other boxes that have arrived. As long as it holds up, he can have it.
Alex moved onto the new glider loveseat and made it his favorite napping spot. When Mom visits, she'll have a couch buddy.
That's pretty much it. Life is good.

I'm sorry to hear about the meds incident. So glad they're better now. Honey bees will visit your hummingbird garden too. Thanks for the update!

I've been researching 6' tall fencing. What is decorative tends to be privacy fencing, which we do not want. A nice picket or flower garden style that happens to be 6' tall is proving hard to find, but then I've only begun to search. Can't even begin to work on the butterfly/hummingbird garden until we have a good deer-proof fence.
Spotacus finally gave up on the deer feeder box. Good thing, too, as it was starting to fall apart. He's back in his usual napping positions now: on the porch chairs or under the porch glider sofa.
Alex is very hard of hearing now, and downright deaf when he feels like it. But open a package of cheese and he appears like magic.
Here's proof that Leoghaire is scary smart. She didn't want to wait for the feeder to toss out the food twice a day. She was licking it off the impeller. WLToo had to rig up a wire thingie to keep her muzzle out of it and still allow the feed to disperse. She's not real happy with him at the moment...

Sometimes, I get lucky. Went to the local water company's display day and won a door prize. And what a door prize! No, it's not THE Egg. It's a knockoff, but boy, does it do a good job. Cooks at temps from 200-700 F. So far, everything WLToo has cooked in it has been amazing -- even the wild pig. Between this, the smoker, and our little RV grills, we could have a serious cookout.

In addition to the grill, I also scored two pre-1959 Wagner Ware cast iron skillets on the Goodwill auction site. The No. 5 is in perfect non-stick condition. The No. 3 was badly treated and has to be cleaned down to the iron, then re-seasoned. Both will stay in the house, and my unmarked 1950s cast iron skillets of the same sizes will go out to Steinbaum.
Well, it's time to finish up a story for our writers' group anthology. We're doing it so unpublished members will finally be published, and all proceeds will go to our library. Some great submissions so far.
Back to writing.
Later, y'all.

Leoghaire is beautiful. Congratulations on the grill and Wagners. We keep our Wagner ware at the house too. They're getting rare. Good to hear from you!

The day after my last post, Mom was in a car accident, breaking her ankle, kneecap and a couple of ribs, and totaling her car. Sister and I stampeded up here, where we've been hauling stuff back and forth from rehab, and getting the house ready to receive her when she's released this weekend. For a 91-year-old, she's constantly amazing the staff with her resiliency.
So the only wildlife I've observed is a strange species called "hospital visitors," and they are strange, indeed...
Each morning, I greet the rabbit that lives under a tree in Mom's front yard. It's not at all afraid of me, so I guess Mom talks to it, too. Doves like to land on Mom's deck, but each time I try for a photo, they leave. There's a cricket making a lot of noise somewhere in the kitchen, but I haven't seen it yet. When I do, it meets the flip flop o'doom, the noisy bugger...
WLToo is coming up later this week, and bringing Alex and Spotacus. I miss my guys - all three of them.
My siblings and I will work out a schedule for one of us to be here throughout Mom's recovery. She'll still have her leg in a soft cast, with absolutely no weight allowed on it, until early October, and physical therapists will come to the house all that time, if I understand the process correctly. After she can put weight on it, even more physical therapy, but I don't know if they'll want her to come to town or they'll come out here. Either way, one or more of us has to be here.
It's only been, what, three weeks(?) and I'm exhausted. Have been moving stuff, getting ready for the carpet stretchers to come fix all the wrinkles tomorrow. Already told Mom I am not putting all that **** back. She's gonna have to give up some of it. Since she's not here, I've also been picking a drawer or two a day and cleaning it out, so now there are actually three empty drawers in the house. When my back calms down a little, I'm supposed to root through her fabric stash (!!!), pull out all the 1960s double knits and send them on their way. That should empty at least two drawers.
Maybe when the boys get here, I'll have a story or two, as they adjust to being here again.
Later, y'all.

Oh, wow! Good for Mom, recovering from the accident like a champ! Those depression era kids are made of different stuff. My mom passed @ 93 and would've slept on a picket fence and never complain. I can sympathize with your mom's miseries. The ribs contain an "alarm system" meant to get the owner's attention because of all the vital organs inside. Oh boy, do I remember that rib pain years later!
Good luck sorting Mom's lifetime collection o' stuff. They do get attached to all their treasures and can tell you how they acquired every single thing. The polyester bolts should be safe to toss, though. Not to worry, the cats will find your cricket in no time.

I wouldn't wish the broken ribs on anyone. I went through that when I was 6 months pregnant with our youngest daughter because of a car accident. The rest of the pregnancy was agony because every time she moved, the ribs gave. They didn't start to heal until after she was born.

Prayers for your mom's quick healing.

Mom came home from rehab on 16 Sep, albeit still in a wheelchair. WLToo arrived the evening prior with the cats. Mom's brother and sister-in-law arrived Friday while we were retrieving Mom. It was kinda crowded for a few days.
Spotacus and Alex like to walk around outside here, but only for short stretches. They are not at all accustomed to grass over actual dirt, instead of rocks, so it feels kinda funny. Then something badly frightened Spotacus, possibly a hawk going after rabbits in the field behind the house, or folks shooting at the doves. He couldn't get back inside fast enough, then didn't even try to go outside for several days. Now he goes for a few minutes, longer if we're outside with him, then comes back to sleep on Mom's king bed. At night, he prefers to sleep with her, as the twin beds WLToo and I are in are much too narrow for him to stretch out.
Alex has moved into the love seat and one of the bay windows. Between those two locations, he's happy.
We spent two days cleaning out Mom's office, so Sister can move her office equipment in and actually work. Luckily, I don't have that issue, so I'll just keep on cleaning out stuff around the house. Mom is going through very old files and tossing most of it.
We haven't gotten to the fabrics yet. I did look in the designated drawers for the double knits, but they weren't there. Moving fabrics is not a priority at the moment. Moving out thousands of books is...already told her I will not move them back into her bedroom and make it back into the mess it was.
Heading home by myself this weekend. Have jury pool on Monday. I'm pretty certain I won't be selected, as no attorney wants experienced investigators and analysts on the jury. But I'll get a few days at home, to change some of my clothes and get a few more appropriate for the fall weather that's coming soon.
I do not live a boring life. That's for certain.
