Spot has finally decided that the bed is a great place to nap, or to drape himself over human legs at night. He's also becoming a huge love bug. I guess after almost a year that he's learning how these humans pet and love our kitties, and that it's ok.
Been raining a little bit today, not enough to register, but the air smells nice. A 6-point buck is in the meadow, running around in the rain and just hanging out. Mama Doe and two babies are also in the meadow, but they're ignoring him and he them. He's sure giving us the once over, though.
No more hummingbirds, no more barn swallows, so we have flies. Ick. The wood door has no screen, so we're looking into one of the invisible types, as a storm door won't work there.
The roadrunner likes to sit on top of the cargo trailer and make raspberries at us. Spot still thinks he can catch it, and that's really funny to watch, as the bird leaves Spot way back in the dust. Alex doesn't react to the roadrunner; it's too large for his lunch.
Otherwise, it's a quiet day in the country.

Maybe you should start calling Spot Wile E. Just make sure you don't have any cliffs nearby...

Spot has run off the edge of the pool deck more than once, trying to get the bird in the juniper next to the pool. Luckily, it's only about a four foot drop, so he's fine. It took a few times for him to figure out that he can't run into the tree...

The roadrunner story reminded me of the story of how my co-Heart dogs, Max and Willow (waiting together at the Bridge) got their nicknames Coyote and Roadrunner. Would you like to hear it?

This was back in '89 or '90, I don't remember exactly. I had gotten Max, my German Shepherd, from a breeder back in '87 and had adopted Willow the greyhound from a shelter in Denver as a companion for him in May of '89. They spent almost 10 years together. I can honestly say that I have never seen two dogs more attached to each other than those two, and their antics could fill a book. I love to tell stories about them, and this is one of my favorite.
I had brought the dogs with me for a December holiday visit with my mother, who lived in South Jersey, in a suburb of Philly. Her house was across the street from a school, so I took them over for a little exercise after the long ride. Behind the school was a large field, and I let them off leash. Willow happily ran across the field with Max in close pursuit. When they reached the other side of the field, Willow suddenly shifted gears and took off, leaving Max, as you say, in the dust. Max just stopped, staring after Willow, and I could hear him whining from across the field. The only thing missing was the jaw dropping to the ground. From that time on, they were known as The Coyote and The Roadrunner.
Here's one of my favorite pictures of the two of them, taken back in '97. Note the placement of Willow's paw:

Awww, the laying on of the paws. They were quite a pair.
WLToo said the roadrunner was back this afternoon, pecking on the patio door. I missed it; was volunteering at the library.

You certainly have quite a menagerie there.
Max and Willow were indeed quite a pair. They had a habit of getting into trouble together, a trait that earned them another nickname: Bonnie and Clyde. One of the funniest stories I remember happened shortly after I adopted Willow. I call it The Tale of the Tattletale:
Now, at the time I adopted Willow, I had a sofa and loveseat in the living room, a pair I had purchased from Sears right after arriving in Colorado. From the time Max was a puppy, I had let him share the sofa with me, but now he was well on his way to fulfilling the prophecy of his name (he eventually "Maxed" out at 121 pounds) and, of course, Willow had to share the sofa as well. There was no way the 3 of us could all fit on the sofa, and I was soon to buy a new, larger sofa, so I started chasing them off and soon (so I thought) had them broken of the habit.
One night a little later, I was reading in bed when Willow entered the room with a "Timmy's fallen in the well" look on her face. She was obviously trying to get my attention, so I said "What is it, girl", at which point I would swear that I received a picture inside my head of Max on the living room sofa. I got up and entered the hall just in time to see Max slinking off the sofa. I looked at Willow, and could swear that she had a smug look on her face.
There is a happy ending to the Tale. When I got my new sofa, the old love seat went into the den, where Max and Willow spent many happy hours sleeping together. It is still there, and River the foster uses it to sleep at night.

Sounds like a great sofa.
Another fire here at the lake, this time two structures totally destroyed, one heavily damaged. We could see the smoke, but with those structures being down in a lower area, did not see what was burning.
While we watched, Spot dashed up, bopped me on the leg, and made clear that it was play time. So I threw things for him to chase until he got tired of it, then he dashed off to start his afternoon patrol. He's a happy guy.
Alex is parking himself on my lap or beside WLToo. I guess at his age that even the 60s is a bit chilly.
Mama Doe strolled up to me this morning, and I gave her a cut up apple that WLToo thought was too bruised for us to eat. She's very polite (cautious), and stood quietly until I laid the apple on the grass and backed off.
One fawn's mama seems to have abandoned it. We see it grazing by itself around our meadow, and rarely with the other two fawns. But we do see more than Mama Doe and Snort in the meadow, so I'm guessing the fawn's mama comes by occasionally, and we just don't see them together.
Mr. Six-Point Buck is still jumping into the meadow, but no luck. Guess he's just not their type.
Feeding time on the old homestead. Later.
