Got the 2013 fuel price chart printed, cheapest highlighted and in my reference folder for our Alaska trip the year, heading from OKC after Mothers Day, killing time in Colorado before heading further. Richard

Does the Gas Buddy phone app work in Canada and Alaska?? Also do the stations listed all sell diesel fuel?

The app works but the problem is getting updates further up the highway.

All of the stations that indicate they have diesel do. The problem here is, with the size of your rig getting to the pump may be difficult. Generally if the station is along the highway you can get to the pump. If the station is more in town it may be difficult. We bypassed some pumps in favor of a cheaper station up the road. The station looked like it was near the main road. When we arrived it was in a shopping center and the pump alignment made it impossible accessing the pump. We ended having to drive a long ways out of the way to get get fuel. We wasted more fuel and time than if had paid 3 cents a liter more earlier.

As a local Canadian explained. "In a given area there is no fuel price fixing it's just that all of the prices are the same."

In 2013 we found that Gas Buddy in Canada was not very useful and often not updated for our Alaskan trip. Guess why?

Also be aware that cell data can be very expensive in Canada. You might be able to connect to the usually slow and unreliable CG WiFi.

If traveling the Alaska Hwy, fuel up in Ft St John, Ft Nelson, Contact Creek, Teslin Yukon Motel, Otter Falls Cutoff, possibly Beaver Creek or Border city (maybe about 30 miles between the two), and Tok. They are doable for 30+/- gallon diesel tank and 9mpg. A spare 5gal can of diesel will add to your comfort factor. Prices in 2015 were in the range of $1.09 to $1.39/litre, 3.8 litres to the gallon, CDN, where the Canadian $ is trading at a 33% discount to the US$. There are other places, but these have been the most reliable and least expensive over the last 10 years.

What is the best way to pay for diesel fuel on a road trip from Idaho to Alaska? Do the stations take Visa or is a specific gas card better? I have found that Chevron, Texaco, and Shell don’t seem to be in an abundance on the route through British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon Territory, and Alaska.

The PenFed Cash Rewards card has no transaction fees and 5 percent cash back on fuel every month. The card must be swiped at the pump for the cash back. Requires a second account and I have a $25 money market account.

Be sure that your card does not have transaction fees.

Thanks for the response but this really does not answer my question.

Hardly even seen a gas station in Canada that doesn't take Visa/MC. The only discussion is usually whether I can swipe at the pump or have to go inside with my US card.

That said, in the RV I always have enough cash for a fillup. Just in case the credit card system isn't functioning for whatever reason.
