If you do not want to leave your card indicate how much you want to be charged to your card and if you don't use it all you get a refund or the pump shuts off when you reach that amount. In BC it is the law to prepay (Grant's law). He has a young gas attendant who tried to stop a youth from stealing $8 worth of gas. He was dragged to his death. The gas station is 2 blocks from my home and the young man was dragged through our neighbourhood and for another 8 km before the youth stopped. I still remember the drag marks left. The law may be an inconvience, but it does protect the gas attendants.

I had to prepay in many places in the USA too, otherwise you did not get fuel.I tell them how much, they charge it, then get re-imbursed the difference.

I just got home from a 6,000 km wander around the North, and have some fuel observations that are different than in previous years. Of particular note, all the gas stations in Watson Lake are the same price as Whitehorse ($1.329 for regular), so cheaper than even Contact Creek ($1.349), and much cheaper than Nugget City ($1.549) and Junction 37. Muncho Lake is still the highest on the highway, $1.969 at Northern Rockies Lodge and $1.989 at Double G. Further south, Prince George at $1.399 is higher than small communities to the west on Hwy 16 such as Vanderhoof, the best price at $1.289

I see it's been a while so as an update I have been paying on average 1.46cn per liter for diesel. The high so far was 1.799 at Testa River Lodge!!
Great cinnamon rolls though :-). Took the shock away!!

If your are going to drive the Dempster, fuel up at the card lock at the junction ($1.53/L diesel),
way cheaper than in Dawson ($1.69/L). Also if you can make it to Fort McPherson fuel up there ($1.69/L). Eagle plains was $1.75/L and it is dispensed to the nearest litre.
Inuvik was $1.83 at the card lock.
