Did you happen to notice the dome... we assume it has something to do with the Chuck Yeager Airport in Charleston, WV about 6 air miles away (my guess)

By-the-way... not a single bird left a greeting gift on our camper or truck. I thought that it would be covered.

Taking that as a good welcome, we stayed all night [emoticon]

My grand dad on my mothers side owned dairy's, beer joints, and property... including at least a third of the property that this huge mall is on. My niece lives in the family home.

This was the main highway when I was a kid... US-119 will take you from Charleston, WV through the mountains to Logan and Williamson in WV and on to Pikeville, KY and on to Cumberland Gap where Danial Boone crossed through the mountains.

We are headed toward Charleston... about 3 or 4 miles away.

My great gradparents lived in a cabin about where the house with the Sat dish is now located in this picture is now located.

I can remember a couple of things... they spoke german... and grand ma's tongue was as red as fire from smoking a corn cob pipe. My favoite source of delite as a lttle kid was to get her to stick her tongue out for me. It seems a long time, tit was before 1945.

My parents moved into my grandparents house while I was in the USAF... it is just showing at the far right in this picture. The woods behind the houses was part of the pasture fields back when my grandfather had one of his dairy barns near the house.

The dairy barn was located in the middle of the picture (where agarage is now located.... the house is on the left and has been modified many times over the last 150 years or so. The front porch has been closed in since the last time I was here 5 years ago or so...

The building on the right was the milk house... where the milk was bottled for customers in Charleston. It was all in use when I was a kid... there were big blocks of ice in the buildings and on the trucks... us kids had ice to lick and home made icecream often.

The strip mall extends to the back of the woods. The buffer zone is nice... but the sky is lit up like the sun 24/7

The steps go up to the smoke house... under it was the celler. By the time my kids visited the top was a playhouse for the 50 or so grandkids... the bottom (cellar) had the washing machine and later the dryer.

I tried to warn you that our meandering truck camper expedition had turned into a trip down memory lane.

I'm enjoying the memories...

I live about 2 miles south of Cabela's on US 119. Please let me know when you are in the area again. You must have been in one of the handfuls of TC's I see around here. I used to turn my head around looking at horse trailers...now I do the same with truck campers.
That little bit of back road pictured above is narrow and curvy. You are a brave man for taking the camper down that thing. (if that is the road I think it is....WV back roads all look alike!)
Love the pictures!

In the early 1940's My grand parents house din't have a toilet in the house... there was a privy on the creek bank just to the right of where my truck is sitting in the last picture.

The creeks name is Dry Branch... when the water would rise in the creek it apparently "flushed the pit"

Every house along this highway had a privy... or you might call them "out houses."

I can remember when they installed the indoor plumbing in the house in 1945... and a cesspool under the lawn (it was an early type of septic tank), it composted the solids but a pipe drained liquids to the creek.

The world has come a long way... think about all of those privys and the waste from the dairy being dumped into a small creek.

Some of you may have experienced it.

You must know Rabel Mountain... a famous War Corrospondent fromViet Naum and later military actions move back there. I visit with Ed on facebook...

The road you see in the pictures is north of Sams and the house has the Mercedes dealership on the mountain behind it.

A portion of the Dairy property where my grand parents lived on Green Road in the 1920's now has the Jewish Cemetary where that house was located.

As far as going back... I might not ever get back... after 40 years away there isn't much need to do this again. Wish we had met while there.

We have a very few friends left in West Virginia... many moved away and others have passed on.

My parents and grend parents and a lot of other familyare buried at Graceland Cemetary.
