And I'm explaining that I think that he is going to have to come up on top...

He was worried that the top wouldn't hold us both... he's a pretty big guy.

Truth is... I had to have help... and just crossed my fingers briefly.

d the cover off.... good thing too. It needed a good wipe down inside... after all it was 10years old and had countless hours during its day trips and the thousand plus nights traveling.

We got the A/C lifted by taking a butcher knife and cutting loose the old gasket from inside the camper and on the roof.

We ended up rollong it up onto the side you see here.

I observed that the wires were connected to other wires with crimp connectors,,,, and the colors might be a solid yellow connected to a yellow wire wirh a red stripe.

I left half the joint connected and left enough of the odd side to find my way when it was time to rewire.

This is just a few of the wires... I think there were about 15 total... many were about 22 awg)

I could have cut and spliced the gasket... but I didn't want to build in a fail point where it would leak in the future.

With more than 15 splices I had to worry... if the system didn't function properly I'd have to take each of the new connectoes apart... on both ends to try to find why... more than 30 crimps.... and the were hard to get to... standing on a stool, my hands in a narrow hole over head.

When I got through I was almost afraid to try it....

Wow! everything worked

The gasket was $26, the help of a friend was priceless, the camper is dry and the A/C works.

I was too tired to take another picture... and wish that I taken more on the roof.

BTW... I put the jacks down to stabelize the camper... rocking and rolling on a RV roof is not a good idea for me right now.

Well done Chet.

I don't know why but I never think about putting the jacks down when I am on the roof - makes sense. Also, it means you extra weight up there is being carried by the jacks which are bolted directly onto the overhanging sides of the camper, which makes sense too.

Steve.

Chet, Same as you, I Allways put the legs down for stability, whenever on the roof, as I do not like heights. Very thorough job. Well done.

I had never put the legs down before... the roof or the camper doesn't roll as much as a boat.

My knee replacement proved to me that it is not as simple as cutting out and glueing in a replacement knee.

You might have noticed that older men are bow legged or what we used to call "Banty legged" ( chicken legged )

When they get that way the inside portion of the kness wear away the miniscus that keeps the upper and lower bones from rubbing together and wearing out the knee bones... and creating pain.

So... the solution is to replace the worn bones and the wear pad.

All well and good... the surgeon replaces the knee... perfectly... straight like it was when you were 20 years old.

Bad news... your other knee is still crooked. and slightly shorter than your new knee replacement. On level ground you can walk in a way that appears normal...and more bad news... your hip joint on the side of the new knee has also been straightened up to where it was 50 years ago... and pushing the whole hipe up higher just enough to be a pain (literally)

Now, why did I share the boring details...?

When you get on a rolling truck camper roof with uneven, mis-aligned legs it is much harder to maintain your balance... at least it is to me.

Even steps that are varied in height can be a problem occasionally.

As we age we must change in order to keep going... at least safely.

Now, I can smell spring in the air... time to dream of far away places and no more doctors... and no accidents wanted.

Thanks for sharing details about dealing with what many of us have to deal with. I am still trying to avoid a replacement if possible. What I have found helps me is walking more on the ball of my foot with less impact on the heel. I practice this most days on an "elliptical" trainer at the local exercise facility. Changing the way one walks after 70+ years does not come naturally, but does seem to help.

Your hints may help others like us add a few more years to our TC travels.
