After a very good meal we headed toward St Albans... dump station, water, and a parking place for the night.

WE ended up parking at the boat ramp area... where we could see the new bridge being built.

Look at those storm clouds coming in from the west...

I have posted pictures of the old bridge before on previous trips through the area. It was a very tall, shakey bridge that was built in about 1934... like the Silver Bridge in Pt Plesant... but a different type of construction. Everyone that ever crossed it said prayers all the way accross.

They tore it down and replaced it in a total time of 9 months... it will soon be opening for traffic...

I have to find a gasket for the airconditioner and phone my friend Steve for help... I haven't recovered enough to do it by myself.

Good night... sleeping will be nice here beside the river... I was born about a mile from here... I grew up listening to the rail road trans and the tug boats... like a mothers heart beat.

With a little more detail.

To be able to complete the replacement in 9 months they reused the piers after extensive repairs to them.

Janet hated this bridge with a passion... and we lived on the other side... meaning we crossed the bridge as much as 18 times a week... I worked on this side, Janet shopped on this side.... the library was on this side...

I took this picture from Janets seat in the dinette..meaning she sees the area of the bridge that we always got stuck on when traffic was heavy. I should have changed the way we were parked but I wanted the dinette opening out toward the river.

I was discharged from the USAF on June 30 1962... like many of my generation I planned on heading to California....

I stopped in WV to see my family. Mom asked me what I was going to do... I didn't have any plans at all.

I'd saved up a fair amount of money. The Air Force paid me $102 a month. My military job allowed me enough time to have a second job... I bartended at night... the tips were good... sometimes 5 cents on a beer after 7 PM when 14 oz glass of beer went up to 25 cents. ( The beer was only 15 cents during the day. A T-bone steak, baked potato, vegitable of the day, rolls, and a salad was $3.04.

Mom hadn't seen me but a couple of time in the previous 4 years... she asked me to put in for a job where my dad worked... FMC Inorganic Chemicals... that she'd heard that they were hiring.

I did... took a lot of tests and interviews... and dadgone if they didn't hire me. I was nuber 4 out od 21 hired. They sent us to school before we ever worked a day.... economics

It was a good bunch of guys... one of them was also single... we became great friends. Steve would also become highly skilled.

When we got to WV I gave him a call and asked for help with the campers air conditioner. I'd bought a new gasket but was afraid the A/C was too heavy for me, I wasn't even sure that I could get on the roof of the camper.... the new knee and other medical problems were cramping my style.

Steve would help.

He had a good level spot behind his garage. We had to hurry to stay ahead of the intermitant shows that had been rolling through for days.

I had to pry the unit loose... without damaging anything. Steve was inside the camper where I had removed all of the trim and filters etc. I could also see a lot of wires from underneath.

Steve was bringing more blocks for me to use when prying.
