Memories are all tied together... one pops up and leads to another.
The Silver Bridge collapse was a big deal... in a year of big happenings all around me.
The Viet Nam War was raging by this 1967. we were losing a lot of good men.
The USA had sent advisor troops over in 1960, I was in the USAF... we didn't pay much attention... Cuba had our attention.
In 1967 I was a pipefitter at FMC in South Charleston WV about 40 miles up the Kanawha River from here. We'd been on strike for months during 1967. I had a family to feed... to survive I painted houses, painted the inside of the WV Capital Dome, what ever I could get.
I promised myself that I'd never get in a bind like this again... and, the US Gov't came through with the GI Bill, retroactively to 1960.
I signed up for West Virginia State College to start in January of 1968. Thinking an education would see us through.
While taking a full load at State I continued working at FMC... hooking up barges and RR tank cars... emergency repairs while I went to school. I had to carry 14 hours to get full advantage of the GI Bill. I took chemistry, biology, Spherical trig, and english... studyed between tasks at work... slept on my feet if at all.
1967 crashing all around me started it all... the bridge was a diversion at the time... but visiting it now triggered thoughts that I never had time for before.
Note: I finished college with three majors and was hired by oak Ridge National Lab in 1974.
Maybe every one should get in their truck camper and take a trip down memory lane. It was fun...
