I am *really* wanting to boondock/dispersed camping in Michigan but when I've searched the Michigan DNR site it didn't appear you could boondock in the state forest areas. I take it you can indeed boondock in the state forests?

Where about in Michigan are these spots? I checked the map south of Houghton Lake and is this in the Roscommon State Forest?
So I could go down any of those roads off US 27 and find a spot and camp with a DNR permit?

Thanks!

Hi!

I think this might help. If anybody else has more information it would be greatly appreciated.

Michigan Dispersed Camping

You can camp anywhere on Michigan State Forest Property as long as:

* the property is not posted "No Camping"
* you are more than one mile from a designated State Forest Campground
* you follow all State Land Rules

You must also post a Camp Registration Card (PR 4134) at your campsite. To obtain a Camp Registration Card, contact your local DNR Office.

RFOneWatt is correct. You must be minium one mile from a state park or state forest campground.
The interesting thing is a couple of weeks ago when my son and I were campeing in these pics on the Muskegon river two other campers were present but they did not have a permit and I never spotted a ranger checking things out. I would suggest you get the permits by calling the Michigan DNR and they will mail you as many as you request in reason of course.
Go to the DNR on line and look up maps for state forest lands broken down by county then go on google and check the spots out. I have found many and when I am up there camping I will drive around to the locations which I think might work. I can't afford to get caught down some one track narrow road with no way out and 35' of rig waiting to go somewhere. If you need more info email me with questions. Enjoy camping!!!

Thanks for the info guys. Last I had checked it appeared that it was tents only so maybe the changed that rule. Either that or I confused it with the Manistee/Huron National Forest rules.

I just have a popup but still got to be able to not get stuck down a dead end with no way to turn around either. Although a bit easier then a 5ver. [emoticon]

Memorial day weekend 2010. Dispersed camping at Molasses River - Gladwin Mi ORV area.
Very dry and no place to swim!!!! Fishing not good but the cool nights were great for sleeping.

The one track road to our dispersed camping. Very few BUGs which was not surprising due to the fact
northern Michigan is extremely dry this year!!!
