I have a 99 Dodge 250 2X4 cummings. I think the scale say the weight of the truck is 7,100 lbs.

Please help me.

I looked up my trucks GVWR= 8,800 and rear gross axle ratingis 6,200. I am trying to find out what size 5th wheel I can pull safety.
So, what is the biggest in weight size 5th wheel I can pull?

Chuck

I can guarantee you your truck does not scale at 7,100# from the factory being a 2 wd. My son's reg cab 4x4 scales at 6,500#. My 98 2500 4x4 with fuel and two adults weighed about 7,100#.

You need to weigh your truck fully loaded with hitch, fuel wood and whatever you will camp with. Now go to the scales and weigh each axle. The rear is most important as you will never overload the front axle with a 5er. Now take the max weight the tires will carry at 80psi and double that. Subtract the rear axle weight from the two tires carrying capacity. Now you know that the MAX pin weight you can carry.

Find out what the RV's max weight rating is then take 25% of that if that number is less than the load you have available with your tires you are good to go. Also the length plays into the equation in my book. I would stick to less than 34'.

Stay below 11K pounds 5th wheel with that truck, and you should be happy. My 01 2500 Cummins 6 speed with me in it does scale at 7150, and I only weigh about 190 of that.

Weighed my truck 10\14\13...truck had hitch in it, toolbox, full tank of fuel and full tank of DEF..just me though, steer axle was 5280 (rated at 6,000#), my drive axle was 3860#, (rated at 9750#)..Gross weight was 9140# (GVWR is 14,000#).

Weighed my whole combo 3/5/14. Full tank of fuel, full DEF tank, me, wife, two boxers, tool box a tad more loaded and 5er loaded almost as full as if we would be gone a week...all tanks empty, cept black water probably had 10 gallons or so in it and 2 5# bags of ice to slosh around in the tank while driving from Asheville NC to Seviereville TN..

I digressed....front axle was 5460# (again, rated at 6,000#
Drive axle was 7200# (before it was 3860), which gives me a pin weight of 3340# .

My Gross weight was 12,660 (truck plus pin weight) which is 1,340# under my trucks GVWR.)..Drive axle weight of 7200# put my truck 2550# under my RAWR of 9750#, (based on tires and psi).

My trailer axle , 12,580# and pin weight 3340#, put weight of my 5er @ 15,920#, (has a GVW of 16,900#)...Didn't have my generator.

Total weight of combo was 25,240#....trucks GCWR is 37,600#.
Anyway, all these weights were taken on CAT scales.

You are too far from your limits! A larger RV is in order.

Out of curiosity do have the manf. dry pin wt or your own dry pin wt, figures?

It may help new folks understand real world payloads vs. what the brochure specs reference.

I purchased the 5er "brand new" off the dealers lot in October of 07'. I had a brochure that showed an "unloaded pin weight" of 2800#, "unloaded weight of 5er was published at 14,440#....I weighed the unit shortly after I drove off the lot with it, (did have two 40# propane tanks filled)...Been some years back, but weight of the 5er was 14,500#, and pin weight, at that time was 2850#...(going by memory).

Since then 5er has a roof top satellite on it (HD, Winegard), and up front added a combo Splendide washer/dryer combo...

So, loaded to "JUST UNDER" 16,000#, my pin weight is actually 3340# at this time...."right at", 21% of my 5er's weight...and 530# more than an empty pin weight number. Not that bad of a number given by HR back in 06'....I just knew not to go by that.

I don't understand why people insist on using "empty", "dry" or "unloaded" 5er or TT weights and/or tongue/pin weights, and possibly base purchasing a TV on those numbers[emoticon] I understand that one can see how much they can load to by looking at empty weight versus GVW, but one would think it would be more realistic to purchase a TV based more on GVW of a TT or 5er.

You've got the right. That's the reason I always recommend reading Before You Buy RV... and using the free BYBRV app.

Well I reckon I'll use this as my first post. I don't have the sheets in front of me and all I remember is the one time I weighed the rig in Wells, NV.
With all my stuff in the 5vr, TV full of fuel, the dog and I= 25,700lbs. Hopefully my rig description will post in my sig.

You'll be seeing lots of questions from me in the future as I go through rebuilding the beast. Basically it froze up on my S.O. during the winter of 08/09 while I was in Iraq as a contractor (retired USN 2004). Bought a house for the Misses and things slowed down last yr and now I'm looking for work and must travel to another location. Ok, enough for now but yak soon. Bigfoot 6 pt leveling on my mind.
