Not everyone tows long distance, I can be at the ocean or the mountains on a standard size tank of fuel.
For better or worse, I actually sorta need the around every 3 hour break to refill fuel... lol!

larger tanks mean you could make it ROUND trip (on a short trip)....and w/ a larger/aux tank you can still stop as often as you want....just means your stops are SHORTER or not consumed fueling up or waiting in line.
even on Short runs & around town an aux tank means you don't fill up as often and you can fill up based on lowest COST anywhere along the route.
even in a light towing situation (or motorcycles in the back of my pickup) w/ the aux tank i could run houston to central portion of virginia w/out stopping for fuel....i always stopped when i needed and i researched where the cheapest fuel was on my route.
we would run houston to santa fe & buy fuel in amarillo - not because we needed it but because it was cheapest....it allowed us to have enough fuel to get to the destination and BACK to amarillo and avoid higher NM fuel prices.
I don't know about NOW but before FORD was doing DEF the long bed truck had 10 gallons more fuel capacity (29 vs 39)....w/ a short bed you don't even have the OPTION really - my 50 gal aux tank only consumes 10 inches of bed depth....ive still got more room even w/ the aux tank than a short bed does.

60 gallon RDS tank with toolbox. I drove 450 miles to Lake Ontario and still had half my regular tank of fuel left. I love not having to find fuel while in tow. Plus, I plow in winter. Sometimes very long storms... And having the tank just makes life wicked easy.

Another reason to stay stock would be if your vehicle was already close to max towing weight, adding an additional fuel tank and 50-60 gal of more fuel sounds like a lot of added weight?

if your pickup truck cant handle 500 lbs of fuel you bought the wrong truck to tow any travel trailer or 5er.

We live in Alaska flew to Seattle bought the truck, drove to Corning Calilfornia bought the trailer came up the coast to Seattle then back to Alaska. Total trip 5200 miles the EcoBost towed like a dream! Trailer is 6300# empty, tongue weight 650#, Max gross 10,000. After loading the TT are weight was 7900#. Mileage average 9.2mpg 60 mph. I was in the trucking business 43 years and was skeptical of the 1/2 ton pu, but not now.

Not everyone can afford a sweet freight liner like you have, bshpilot. I will be towing with a 3/4 ton diesel which has only 2,730 lbs of carrying capacity. When it is loaded down with a camper top, a couple small motorbikes in the back, a 10,000 lb TT (loaded) with 1,000 lb tongue wt, the stock 39 gallons of fuel, passenger, generator, spare gas, etc. I doubt I'd have an extra 500lbs to spare though I'm well within the vehicle's specs in all other areas. We all make do with what we can afford.

Chip i bet i have less in our coach than most have in their p/u's & 5er's, but then we didn't buy new either. In the day and age of $70k+ pickup trucks it didnt take long to justify the cost of a used coach (especially when we get better mpg than most p/u do towing).
When you have a short bet truck you generally don't have the option since you don't have the space.....the long beds (w/ longer wheel base) usually ride a little better too.
I still own our f350 - everyone needs a p/u eventually.

Wow, $70k for a pickup is crazy - I'd get a used HDT first for much less. I only paid $11k for my 08 F-250 6.4l diesel LB with 108K miles. So far it is doing great. I don't have my FT trailer yet, but I get 17-19 mpg pulling my little Aliner pop-up camper (and low to mid 20s (highway) when unfettered). I'm anticipating getting around 12 mpg towing my FT TT, but time will tell. I will be looking for a TT in the $15k range to FT in, and MPG will be important as we will be on a low budget.
