Our k3500 has the small block 5.7l. Suffers the same challenges as half ton small blocks but has the inner guts (4l80E, 4.10, oil/trans coolers) for worry free towing.

Here is our 1998 K3500 family hauler, bed packed with gear, canoe on the roof, and not a worry at all towing a 5000lb HTT.

Nice truck, a bit over kill with a 1 ton for a 5000 lbs loaded HTT but better to have to much, than not enough. [emoticon]

Anyhow, nothing wrong with a 2008 midsize V8 truck pulling a 23' 5000 lbs trailer. Mine did great, just worse mileage than the F150.

Our rig has 3000lb payload and 8ft bed. Pack it with bikes, firewood, oudoor kitchen, stroller, cooler, canoe gear, tools, large tote, and still have room for gear.

PAthwaker, can you describe what product you're using to carry that canoe? I have the same rise on my camper top and didn't know what to do. Did you drill through the fiberglass to mount it?

You can install something similar to the Yakima tracks from this following link. But yes, drilling into the fiberglass is required for these tracks. I used them in the PNW and they sealed fine, didn't leak. With these types of tracks, Thule also makes a similar product, different length cross bars provide a lot of options. I can mount two kayaks laying flat on my canopy:

With what I have named Big Red:

We will be pulling the same TT but I imagine it will much more enjoyable. Gotta check the dual cam for readjustment before our next trip.

I've got a question. Do you have the hand rail at the entrance door turned forward like that for a specific reason? I never thought to do that but will start now. Last year we're tooling down the highway and a car pulls up alongside making all these gestures and I look back and our door is swung open! We were certain we had locked it securely but obviously we messed up. It seems this would act as insurance against the door flying open. We leave in just a few minutes on a 4 week trip and that is going to give me even better peace of mind!

We always turn ours that way, Just in case the door should pop open its got something else to hold it.
