In answering Campingshadow concern about the vet's clean bill of health. Old Fella was given his first shot on the 19th of September and he stayed at the vets kennel for 10 days while they monitored his breathing and reaction to the injection that was given, which I am told was a strong dose. The shot he got this morning was a follow up shot to get rid of what was left in his system. I was told to take him home and keep him quiet and give him lots of sugar treats as the injection would drain his energy. By next week he wants Old Fella back at the office to give him a final check. He at that time will put him on a monthly medication for heart worms and this will give him a clean bill of health. What is left, if any, will be so small that it won't matter as the monthly medication will take care of that. Dr. Gradous assure me that Old Fella is out of danger and should live a long life with proper care. Maybe as you pointed out he may still have some worms remain but they will be such a small amount and being under medication it won't matter.

One thing I forgot to mention in the discussion about food...

When I first got Rommie, and ever since then when she gets loose stools (she's got a sensitive tummy and is prone to this), I have given her probiotics. Especially when they've been given antibiotics, which kill the good bacteria in the gut which aids digestion, in addition to killing the bad stuff.

Probiotics, which can be found in the refrigerated section of most health food stores, really aid in digestion and help them get the most out of the nutrients they eat.

Richard.....Thanks for the follow-up explanation. Makes more sense now!! [emoticon]

They never told me to feed sugars to Heidi...guess she is hyper enough!!! [emoticon]

Old Fella is a lucky pup. With the care he is getting I bet he will be around for a lot of years still.

The care Old Fella is getting is courtesy of RV Pet Health Forum readers just like you that stepped up to the plate when it counted. What a great bunch of people!

I'd question that advice, too, especially with all OF's broken teeth. I do hope this is the end of the heartworms for him. On Animal Planet, one time, I saw an open heart surgery to remove heartworms. Yuck!

I just went to look at Probiotics and saw two different types. Can you tell me what you use?

We have a really good, small health food store near us. I just went in and looked and asked a couple of questions (the people who work there are pretty knowledgeable).

The stuff I have now is called "Multidopholus"...mostly because it was the biggest bottle they had (they have smaller bottles formulated specifically for children or older folks or pregnant women, depending on their nutritional needs).

Richard, what did the vet say about Old Fella's odor and antibiotics? I'm just a worried shirt-tale relative wondering ...

BTW, I'm glad he's doing so well. I'm sure he's wondering how he won the lottery when he didn't even have a ticket!!!

Actually, I think he knew it was time to move indoors and spent the summer scouting folk at the campground. He knew one day his mournful eyes would have an effect on a kindly camper ... and he found you. And you let yourself be found.

Also, how are his truck legs coming along? Has he learned to keep his butt planted? Again, just a curious camper ...
