Well, I didn't intend to register here, but once I saw "copywrite" instead of "copyright" when Rich posted the email I sent him, I wanted you all to know I'm not really that stupid. I'm a starving writer and do copywriting on the side to earn extra money. Apparently, my fingers were working on their own without input from my brain when I wrote it. Duh!
So, now that I'm here, I'll give you an update on what's happening. First of all, you guys are the most terrific bunch I've encountered in a long time. I cried my way through the original thread after Barb sent me the link. As I read, I kept thinking ... Wow. What a story. Geez. I'd love to turn it into a book. So much for wishful thinking. As you all know by now, Rich and I discussed it and in a few days, I'm going to get down to business and begin writing it.
Right now, I'm putting the finishing touches on my newspaper column which will be in the weekend edition of the Edwardsville Intelligencer, formally my home town paper. I've been writing my weekly column, "Animal Tails" for more than six years and have seldom had a more heartwarming story to tell. I told Rich I'd send it to him tomorrow so he could post it here, but since the weekend edition of the paper doesn't hit the streets till Saturday morning, I decided the more prudent approach would be to wait until after 10:00 AM CST, Saturday, to post it.
Once the column is available for everyone to read, I'd like the "Old Fella" thread to be dropped from this site. I guess Rich can do that. Then, you all can start the rally thread and post the column at the beginning so newbies will know what the heck is going on. At first I thought leaving the old thread would make for a good selling point (over 8,000 hits, I'm told) when my agent starts pitching the book. But then I decided we might lose customers if we continue to let everyone and their brother read the story for free. The abbreviated version in my column will be enough, I think.
Rich can use the rally thread to post new pictures and keep us all updated on Old Fella. I'm game for meeting you guys just about anywhere, but if I get a vote, I pick Branson. It's close enough that I can bring my youngest dog and she would love the meet and greet as much as I. But whatever you all decide ... count me in.
I promise I will get around to answering all your emails.
Much love to all,
Susanne

Yes, as O.F. becomes more secure in his new environment, there will no doubt be some testing of the limits, with you and with his fur buddies. Perfectly normal. They'll likely settle a lot of it between them, but you'll step in if need be. Sounds like Izzie and Levi have been remarkably tolerant of suddenly having competition dropped into their midst. It'll all work out.

I'm glad that Susanne is going to be writing about Old Fella's story, but I'm not sure I like that this thread will be dropped. I have been coming here daily to read the updates on Old Fella and even though I don't post much, I still feel that I'm part of this group that has been following this wonderful story from the beginning and would hate to see it go away. While I understand Susanne wanting to be able to market the story and not have it posted for "free" on the forum, this is where it started. The wonderful group of people on this forum are the ones that embraced Rich and his quest to rescue a stray that has become special to all of us. I don't think it is fair that we would lose the ability to come here daily to read the updates. I think maybe it would be better to re-think the marketing of the book and just not direct people to the forum as I can't imagine that there is a large percentage of the population that are members here to interfere with the marketing plan. Anyway - that is just my .02 cents. Not that it is worth much.

[b]My initial reaction to Susanne's post was similar, however after thinking about it for a few minutes I don't know that her request is unreasonable assuming she is going to be mentioning RV.NET by name in the story.
I don't think I'm unusual in that I have already read this topic pretty much front to back and then some. As most of us now know, there is a topic in the Rally forum called "Old Fella Rally". If the moderators and admin will allow us to not only post about rally plans, but also Old Fella updates, pictures, etc., then thats good enough for me. It would just be a continuation of this same thread with rally plans thrown in to boot.
Would that fly, mods and admin???
Susanne, BTW, only mods and admin can delete this topic. Not Richard or any other "normal" member.
I have also sent a PM to Dick A., mod in the Rally forum, about this question.

Although I am sure once the book is released I will purchase the book , I disagree with stopping the thread....Once the book is written and released the saga will continue and if it had been in part because of the wonderful people that encouraged Rich and assisted and with out them this whole story very well might have turned out different.
I am sure this book will be a real good seller but It is just my personal opinion that that thread continue so we can continue with the trials and tribulations of Old Fella and his new found family long after the book is released.

I too have read this thread from beginning to end, but I still feel that it is very wrong to take away this thread. This all started when Richard dug down inside his heart and felt the need to rescue Old Fella from a horrible life regardless of what it cost him. Once the story was out to everyone here, people began pitching in whatever they could to make Old Fella's life that much better and it bothers me that now that it makes a wonderful "feel good" human interest story that could be marketable and make $$ we could lose it. It just really bothers me that such a wonderful story would be capitalized on for the sake of marketing and making money. The only way I would feel better about this if it happens is if a large portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book are donated to help homeless animals everywhere.
I'm not trying to slam Susanne because I think it is wonderful that she wants to write about the story, but this isn't about business and making a buck, this is about the love that these people here have for animals and how a few people reached out and did what they could to make things better for one old dog and by doing this touched the lives of many.
I understand that the Rally thread could be updated with pictures, but to be honest, the chances of me getting to attend the rally are few and far between and I would prefer not to have to sift through the pages of posts about the events there to find out how Old Fella is doing.
I'm really not trying to be difficult here, I just feel that to pull this thread for the benefit of marketing a book about it is wrong and unethical.

I agree with Kfancii. Closing this thread would be for the benefit of marketing a book. Just read the Forum Rules and see that "Commercial enterprises and/or their representatives are not allowed to post in these forums".
The feel good attitude of this thread is steadily disappearing for me. JMHO

Not sure I'm comfortable with the thread being removed from RV.net. This is our story. We all own it. I appreciate the desire to sell more books, but many books sell well when the stories are also available through other sources. Let's face it, many of us will likely buy the book and we all KNOW the story quite well. And we'll be asking our friends to buy the book. And we'll give it as Christmas gifts and so forth.
Instead of removing the thread, the thread can be used to promote the book. For those that read the thread online, we can encourage them to donate to the local shelters to help other animals in distress. Maybe we need a FOOFer Foundation, or something.
Rather than see this thread as detracting from the book and its sales, I think the thread can be used to promote sales and encourage folk to get involved.

I don't like the idea of the thread being removed either. JMHO
