Cats won't eat what they can't smell, so cat food is made much smellier than dog food, which is why dogs like it better. (it's also why a cat with nasal congestion can starve itself)
Once or twice is probably not a problem but as cat food is higher in fat and protein, etc, elderly dogs shouldn't regularly eat it.
It's great for a sick dog who doesn't want to eat, though, who needs to be 'tempted' to get him/her to eat again.

Looking forward to the pics of everybody! Wonderful that Izzie and Levi accepted Old Fellow so easily ... yours must be a wonderful home with your pets so willing to welcome a newcomer to the fold! Lucky, lucky Old Fellow!

Old Fellow had a good night. He didn't like being left in the kennel crate but he settled down and went to sleep after a while of whining and barking. This morning he fell right into the routine of going outside and then coming back in, following Levi's example, then ate his breakfast. He is one smart old dog! He and the cat have gotten along just great. His attitude is, I will just ignore the cat and Izzie's attitude is I'll just wait and see if he goes away.
Everything is going so well it is hard to believe that it is happening so easy. Today we will just take it easy and let him lay around where ever he wants, right now he is laying on the rug in the office part of the house where the wife and I stay most of the day. It is easy to see he finds comfort being around us.
It is hard to believe that he was a lost stray living in the wild for 3-5 years and has excepted so well this change in his life. He acts as if he has always been in this type environment proving once again that in the early part of his life he was use to people and was someone's pet. By the way, he still has not messed up once in the house. He lets me know when he wants to go outside by going to the back door and standing. Old Fellow wants everyone to know he loves his new back yard!

He probably even had a kitty friend in a previous life! You know there is a scenario that keeps coming to my mind. Years ago, he might've gone camping with his family and wandered off chasing a rabbit and got himself caught in that trap. When he didn't come back and the family couldn't find him, they may have sadly assumed he'd met with foul play, aka coyote or mountain lion. Poor Old Fellow finally chewed his foot loose from the trap and the rest is history.
It is amazing that you perceived so much in the eyes and behavior of that old dog. I think when he laid down beside your dog, it really said something, didn't it? Dogs are big on mental telepathy. He did a great job of "sending" and you did an outstanding job of "receiving." The Mrs also deserves praise for her "supporting" role.
